Hello everyone. Welcome to the Weekly Spend Challenge. This challenge is open to anybody, no matter what financial place they are in.

On this thread please post an amount of money you wish to stay below within the week (Sunday to end of working day on Friday). This can be pennies or thousands it depends on the individual. Then next Saturday report back and pledge for the following week. The challenge runs from Sunday to Friday so we don't include Saturdays but feel free to change the rules to suit you and include Saturdays or start on a different day.

Feel free to update this thread with daily spends if that keeps you on track. We colour code the results as below:

Green - within budget
Red - overbudget
Purple - zero spend
Yellow - made money over the week

This is a little bit of fun but for many it highlights the fact that maybe that magazine/chocolate bar isn't needed. Hopefully your spending habits can be changed forever.

Moozie was the founder of this challenge and here is a quote taken from her:

The challenge is about incidental spending and not for stuff that should be budgeted elsewhere such as bills, groceries, debt repayment etc but you decide what to include at the end - this is about changing your habits and improving your recording of your spends more than anything else. Have a great week everyone and keep it low!!! Moozie x"

Good luck everyone.

Thanks to LC for running the thread for the last 3 weeks. Sorry I am a bit late starting it as I was camping this weekend and I am just home. Even though the weather forcast was supposed to be raining we had a lovely weekend with a BBQ last night and fires both nights to toast marshmallows. We stayed in a camping pod which was excellent and I would recommend it.

Anyway not much planned for this week but then I said that last week and ended up going to the theatre with my friend which involved dinner and much wine hence I was red. I am pledging £35 this week to include any spends other than groceries and those budgeted elsewhere. One more week until payday :j

I have updated the first post based on last week's thread. Let me know anymore results and pledges and I will update. Any lurkers out there please feel free to join us the more the merrier:beer:

    Hi pp

Glad you had a good time camping - I can't believe you didn't get rained on! It's been p**ing down here since yesterday! Sounds like fun toasting marshmallows :D and what's a camping pod?!

I had to do a little extra supermarket run today (well, I say extra but I didn't plan my shop yesterday very well, and only spent £12 anyway, but still!), which I will count as part of my spends, so...

Sun 18 Sep - Tesco for lunch stuff etc - £7.81

    Total so far: £7.81/£30

  • Hey LC:wave:

I didn't say it didn't rain at all (this is scotland afterall) it rained at intervals that made fire and BBQ possible. Although I did spend 15 mins standing with an umbrella over the BBQ but it cleared up for us eating which was nice. A camping pod is like a wooden hut thing you camp in, see here for pictures (we were in a jumbo pod).

    Hi all,

Can I pledge £35 for this week please. Just back from a very VERY spendy weekend in Edinburgh and really feeling the pinch, not liking the fact still got nearly 2 weeks till payday!

Gonna spend money on a take away tonight, and tomorrow I needs to get stuff for lunch for the week at work. Will report back on my spendings later tonight or tomorrow!

Can totally understand why you wouldn't mind a bit of rain in one those... it has a heater, and lights, and a fridge, and kettle! Jealous...wonder if I could have one on my own...bit sad though :o *sniff*... hehe

I know it was much better than I thought. When I am rich and can afford a house with a garden I want one as my personal shed where I can go for peace. It will have a comfy chair, reading light and a wine rack.

I am agreeing with that Monday feeling as this is my first full week for nearly a month. What course are you doing at OU? I have agreed to do an exam for work in Dec but it involves 7 days of classroom courses and plenty of studying in my own time, gosh knows why I agree to these things, they always seem like a good idea at the time.

Anyway back to business, spends today have been:

    • £2.50 on fruit and milk
    • £2.50 on coffee and a scone from canteen
    • £3 wine
    Total £8 / £35

    Hiya

I love the sound of your personal shed, however mine would also include books, so as to have something to read by the light of the reading lamp :p

I'm gradually studying towards my BSc (Hons) Computing and IT, but it's a slow process. The course just about to start is actually is a Maths course (bleurgh) but unfortunately compulsory. Not looking forward to it!!! The one I'm just finishing is Data, Computing and Information - about how data converts to information with the use of computing, but has some really interesting subjects such as a third of the course is programming, which is definitely my bag - my favourite!! And it covers things like cryptography, security, ethics, history etc, really good stuff.

    Update:

Sun 18 Sep - Tesco for lunch stuff etc - £7.81
    Mon 19 Sep - NSD
    Tue 20 Sep - NSD

    Total so far: £7.81/£35

Inadvertently had a NSD today - never had 2 in a row before!!!

Went out this morning with £5.00 something in my purse, basically until I pay myself again on Friday, fully intending to spend it on ingredients for tea which would make a couple of portions (i.e. today and tomorrow), and then I was so late at work and it was raining and I was tired, so I couldn't be bothered so i came home and defrosted some bolognaise. Which was fine, but not the Spanish fish stew I had planned
