Switching from BG Websaver 8 at contract end.

Unfortunately Ofgem, unlike Otfel, have not come down on automatically renewed rolling contracts. My Websaver 8 Dual Fuel ends on 1 October, just when I am abroad on holiday (28/9 to 5/10 incl.).

I intend to change supplier, but am concerned how I can safely do so without either being penalised for early termination, or finding myself locked in to another BG contract.

How should I go about it all, with the additivity complication that I shall be on holiday ( para 1)?

In such cases are sites like, e.g. Uswitch better than going it alone?

Thank you all in anticipation of your helpful suggestions.

When it ends BG will put you on their standard tarrif.
Do you want to move away or take Websaver 12?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I'll double check but I think Websaver 12 won't save me much, so likely to move away.

    Edit:

Have looked at BG again, and the only way would be to accept Smartmeter.
I've done most that can be done to save energy; double glazing, cavity wall insulation, loft insulation to current standards. So cannot see any benefit coming my way.

Change it is then! So can anyone advise further how to go about the change avoiding any chance of falling foul of penalties? Please!
