NUS Cards, are they worth it?

Hi,

I am a single mum aged 33. I am due to start a degree, distance learning through Portsmouth University.

I think that I am entitled to apply for a NUS card. Does anybody here have one and are they worth it?

Many thanks.

My 17 yr old DD has just re-newed hers and has saved money.

Take a look at where the discounts are valid and see if they are appropriate to you.

My DD shops in Dorothy Perkins, New Look, Superdrug etc so the 10% is really useful to her.
She also got a discount for driving lessons etc...

Many of the discounts are aimed at older teenagers and those in their early 20s, but saying that most of the shops are age restricted :)

It doesn't take long to get the £11 back :)
  • A lot of high street places give you discount with the standard (free) NUS cards, but require the NUS extra card (the £11 one) for online discounts. I've just registered as a student again and decided against the extra card for now as I don't buy that much from the online places that give discount, and a lot of the clothes shops routinely have 20% off vouchers etc. floating around the internet anyway.
  • My university didn't give us free NUS cards, so I decided to buy the NUS Extra card. As a mature student I've been able to get a young person's railcard with it as I added on the international student ID part for a couple of quid more, and have found discounts in places like Rymans to be very useful as you can get a discount on ink cartridges in there. For £11 I think it's worth it.
  • It all depends on what you spend your money on really.. I'm with the OU, so they don't have a free student id, so I have to get the NUS Extra card.

I estimate that I save at least what I spent on it going to the cinema, and that's not counting the 5% Amazon discount, Dorothy Perkins etc. Last year I went on holiday to Crete and mostof the museums were free to EU students, so I saved a fortune there.

My daughter has the NUS extra card and finds it very useful.
On Saturday a few of the shops were doing 20% discount which made what I was spending on clothes for her and her brother's birthdays go a lot further.
I have got into the habit of always asking about discount as there are some places who don't have signs or they are easy to miss and I'd rather be told no than waste money.
I was surprised when the assistant in Dorothy Perkins in Warrington actually compared my daughter to her photo on the card, it's the first time anyone has actually looked at it.

  • I miss not having an NUS card sooo much! You get discounts on so many things - my favourite was the Pizza Hut discount, but that was a few years ago so I'm not sure if they still do it.
  • I don't think its worth it to be honest. I use my standard student card and in the 4 years i've been doing my degree i've never been told I need an nus rather than my standard student ID :) x
  • I'm with the OU, they do a free id card but it is worth getting the NUS card for £11 if you know you will make £11 or more in savings. I know that I will save more than that on amazon discount alone this year so I am applying. It does give you discounts online for many stores too, extra discounts on many clothing stores, cheaper cinema tickets etc. With Christmas around the corner we all will be spending extra mney where the card will be handy. It's obviously not going to be for everyone but like I say if you can make at least £11 savings it is worth it.
