Should I get Autoaid?

I do a fair amount of miles a year (~20k) and I have always gone with AA or RAC for breakdown cover. If all I am interested in is recovery to anywhere in the country then would Autoaid be suitable? My car is currently less than 10 years old. Is it true your car must carry a spare wheel to be eligible to join?
Thanks

    Hi,

I can't help with the car spare question ( I always carry one) but I can say that as I hadn't claimed for yeras I was getting fed up paying AA prices so I switched. A couple of weeks later ( wouldnt you know it) My car broke down and I was thinking Uh Oh, here coes the poor service but no , I got through and got towed to the destination of my choice.

As long as you keep in mind that you have to pay for the recovery and then claim back the amount ( which was paid swiftly in my cas) you should be ok.

  • Thanks, sounds good, I don't mind having to pay and reclaim. Does anyone else know about this spare wheel requirement?

From their policy conditions that you can find here:

    7. You must carry a roadworthy spare tyre with your
    vehicle at all times.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

Notwithstanding the rules as stated, it probably won't be an issue unless you call them with a puncture.
(Similar with the AA & RAC - they won't recover you if you have a puncture but will just fit the spare ... assuming it's there and roadworthy, else they'll do nothing)

I'm sure if you call AutoAid with a snapped timing belt, the last thing they will do is check you have a spare wheel.

Interesting to note the rule wording though. I wonder what happens with the increasing number of cars that do not come with a spare nowadays???

This is worth a look - normal cover like RAC etc, no paying and claiming.

I have bronze cover with ICBreakdown which is similarly priced to startrescue, in fact it was cheaper when I took the policy out. Used it twice, and was recovered about 100 miles the second time no problem.

I think startrescue is better now, because it includes Home Start quite cheaply and includes accident recovery and legal cover.
  • Hi,
I wish to pick the brains of those already using Autoaid if you don't mind.
Currently with Greenflag but looking to go back to Autoaid who I was with a few years back. One thing that did strike me at the time I was with them was that they only sent one 'policy document' which had to be with the the driver/car in use. How does this work then when I have a car and motorcycle (over 150cc) and my wife also has a car? Surely only one of us can have the document handy, so are you NOT covered if you don't have the document in your vehicle?
    Cheers

I've never had any documents with me. Just called with the registration number and home address and everything went through without problem.

All I have with me is their phone number!

I us them purely for their price.

  • I photo copied the document and gave my wife a copy for her car. She has used the service twice, but on neither occasion was asked to produce the document.
