increased intrest rate without notification !

i got my halifax statment yesterday and noticed my intrest rate has been increased without them telling me !
i rang last night and was told that the staff that could deal with this were not in until monday morning . they did say i had been sent a letter in may but i have never recived this !
this is the second time this has happened without notification , last time they appologised and re set it back to the previous rate .
can i argue for this again ? i am ringing them first thing tomorrow !
i have checked and definatly not recived any letter about this

Interesting that they didn't freeze spending on the account the last time this happened, because you effectively rejected the interest rate increase.

You've nothing to lose by calling them and saying you didn't receive notification they were increasing your interest rate. Do they have to send a letter, though? Can the notification be a small 'P.S.' added to the bottom of a statement?
  • not sure but i thought they would have to notify you and the fact that they said they had sent out letters to customers , just wondering if anyone else got one ?

Unless it's for a base rate change they have to give you two months written notice.

That can be a notice included on a previous statement or a traditional letter.

From memory, I think Halifax provides a letter (might be wrong).

I received a letter in May from the Halifax saying the interest rate on my CC was increasing and that if i didnt want to accpet the increase i should call them. I did call them and my interest is now frozen at the previous rate. Could you have mislaid your letter or thrown it away thinking it was junk mail ?

Yes. This is how RBS notified my Mother of a rate jack last year.

Obviously she totally missed it but after a chat with them they actually left the account open and put the APR to 9.9% for six months rather than increasing it from 13.9% to 21.9%

    Bonza!

Obviously transferred the balance away as soon as the six months were up :o
