Has anyone written their own vows

Me and my other half have decided we will write our own vows today. We are in the very early stages of planning our wedding so have plenty of time to think about what we want to say.

I just have absolutely no idea where to start or what I am suppossed to say. I am not very good at putting how I feel into words some times :( but want to write something really special for my other half as he means the world to me

Has anyone else written their own vows? How did you start?

Not yet but we're planning to! If you google search on wedding vows you can find sites with example sof vows to give you ideas. I think I'll probably use some of them for inspiration - maybe take bits from different ones. In my case I'm a little daunted by it but my OH is quite up for it...and as he's already written a song for me (as well as written several others) I know he's quite good at getting those sort of words - I'm more likely to want to get humourous and make comments about loving him despite his snoring and leaving the loo seat up!
    Here's a couple of sites we've used
    http://www.plan-your-wedding-ceremony.com/wedding-vows.html
    http://weddings.about.com/cs/bridesandgrooms/a/vowwording.htm
I get married in 4 weeks so I'll let you know what I did once we're back!
  • Thank you that's really helpful. I too am daunted. My OH takes it all in his stride! He has no problems telling the world how he feels about me I on the other hand are very shy and quite private about things like that. I just want to show him how much he means to me.

I am also worried about crying whilst taking our vows as I cry at everyone else's wedding including those on the TV :o I get teary now thinking about our wedding.

Good luck with yours I am sure the next four weeks will just fly by :j

That's my other worry...this is my 2nd wedding and I was quite calm last time, this time I feel like I'm running on nervous energy. And I get a lot more emotional now generally - ever since I had my kids I blub at anything and I can also fill up just thinking about it. OH is also a very emotional sort and he gets me going when I see him getting like that. At this rate we'll be lucky to get through the ceremony in one piece :rotfl:

Hi, these are fine for church but you may find you can't have them at a civil wedding. We don't allow them, but other areas might I guess.

I love it when couples write their own vows, I've regularly had a tear in my eye. Just say what's in your heart and you can't go far wrong.

  • have you thought of finding a movie one that you like and adapting it

we are looking at the one from corpse bride and changing some of the words and making it a bit longer

With this hand I will lift your sorrows.
Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine.
With this candle, I will light your way into darkness.
With this ring, I ask you to be mine.

    will add something soppy like

with this heart i give you my love and some others as well
The only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 5

Well I finally wrote mine last night, tried them out on OH (at his insistence!) and he loved it. I will happily share but AFTER the wedding lol I did look at various websites but in the end I just went with my own gut feeling - there was just one line I did nick, the rest was my own, though you do find that any example vows inevitably include certain phrases that come up time and again.
I wanted to reflect the fact it was 2nd time round, that he 'took on' me and my kids as a package, that we each have our own families (we each have 2 teenagers) so I did tailor it to make it personal. It took several goes to get there. I did take advice about writing what he meant to me etc but at one point realised I'd captured loads of what he does, how he makes me feel etc but hadn't actually put one single promise or actual vow in there so had to re-write!
  • Thanks double Mummy that's a great idea :j Glad you finished yours Ellay864 and glad your OH loved it.

We have decided today that we are not going to tell any of our family and friends that we are writing our own vows so it will be a surprise on the day. I have plenty of time to work out what I want to say so am kind of looking forward to it now :)

yeap, i googled and then edited it to us a bit

I got this in the end -
Ryan you are my best friend and I gave myself to you in marriage.
I promise to encourage you and inspire you,
even when it comes to Judo!
To laugh with you and comfort you in times of struggle and sorrow.
I promise to love you in good times and in bad,
When life seems easy and when it seems hard
When our love is simple and when it can feel an effort.
I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you,
Have babies with you and to grow old with you,
    I love you Ryan.

I read these vows at the second wedding :) x
