Automatic gearbox question
We went to have a test drive in an 1 year old automatic 1.6 tdi golf which has the dsg box but when the sales person started the car and set off the car stalled. Because the car had been standing for some time the sales person wanted to drive down the road and back to "clean the brakes" and when he came back and reversed the car, it stalled again. The car never stalled again on the test drive
I would have thought that it was impossible to stall an automatic car so is there a mechanical issue with this car.

I've had 2 automatics and never managed to stall them. But none of them were the same type of car as you've mentioned. This might help you. http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77610

If you have any doubt about the car then walk away. There are always plenty more around, even automatics!0

Was it ticking over or revving it with the brakes on?
Auto's can stall if you hold it on the brakes and rev it, But its usually fairly high revs 3000 rpm..ish
Maybe he was over doing the revs whilst braking to clean the rust off them.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
We had a Passat DSG auto that used to stall. Was a right pain to move around the forecourt. Turned out to be a £1700 fix...0

That sounds about right, relative's A4 with the multitronic does wierd things, quotes in excess of £4k to put it right if the £1k simple fix doesn't work.
I can understand people who only keep their cars whilst under manufacturers warranty having these dubious things, but can't understand anyone entertaining one out of warranty.0 -
The car the OP looked at is still under warranty but, even so, I'd walk away. DSG related stalling problems seem to be quite common over the VAG range. We were considering buying an auto SEAT and the problem pops up on the forums I looked at, particularly when going from forward to reverse.0

The Polo GTi DSG has loads of problems. They will allbe the same, or very similar boxes underneath.
I would only ever have a "normal" auto. No semi auto, multitronic, DSG nonsense...0 -
I've had two DSG Audis, the second one stalled a couple of times - only a £3k of warranty repair to fix it and I got rid.
My last Jag had a DPF and even though it was a traditional auto it sometimes used to stall when it went into regen mode - so that went as well.0 -
Thanks for the interesting replies. So if the VAG group automatic box could have issues, which automatic box is worth looking at0
