Putting aside the issues of his private life, I wish we had more MPs like Chris Huhne. He is one of the most intelligent, scientifically literate MPs that we have. (And I say that despite being a former constituent of his who did NOT vote for him at the last general election.)

"Scientifically literate"? A clown who advoctaes covering the country with windfarms which benefit no one but the builders, operators and land owners?

In what way do they not?

The calculation is based on the basic pricing structure, it often ignores the various discounts that are offered, so an accurate price is never obtained.

I used the switching site to find the cheapest tarrif for me, and am now paying around 60% of my previous amount.

You have made an interesting statement there. I find it VERY difficult to believe that you are paying 60% of the price, for each unit of energy now, than you were previously. Especially with the recent large price hikes.

I note that you say "am paying around 60% of my previous amount".
What exactly do you mean by that ?
    1. Are you now paying £60 a month instead of £100 a month ? or:-
    2. Are you now paying (say) 6p per kWh instead of 10 per kWh ?

If it is (1) you are being conned.
If it is (2) you were being conned and fleeced (in a very big way) by your previous supplier.

The site I've just used calculated the cost of my current tariff as exactly the same as my own calculation (rounded to the nearest pound). It included the discount.

I must admit that from what I've read I'm currently in favour of wind farms forming part of our future energy supply. But it would be rather off topic to explore this further here.

Edited to add: When I wrote 'scientifically literate' I was mistakenly 'remembering' that he used to be a chemistry lecturer at Southampton University, which going by Wikipedia appears to be wrong. I must have been confusing him with someone else there :o.

Nah, he's a millionaire who never really did a day's work in his life and now peddles rubbish as being part of the ConDems energy policy. Apparently Huhne is blaming me and you for paying too much to heat our homes. What next from Mr Speedy? Maybe a penalty for not accessing uSwitch once per year?

    .

Then you really need to read some more about it.

I haven't time to dig up a long list of resources today but you could do a lot worse than start here http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/telegraph-view/8771172/Wind-power-a-policy-spinning-out-of-control.html

    and here http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1345439/Customers-face-huge-wind-farms-dont-work-cold.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

    and here http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/leading_article/article7069806.ece

Then follow the links. Christopher Booker has done some excellent research into the fudged figures and his articles are linked from the Telegraph, but there are plenty of other sources which a quick Google or Bing search will produce.

In essence they all say the same thing. Wind power is driven by ideology, not science or economics - and most certainly not by engineering.

People are going to suffer real hardship as a result of Huhne's madness.

I have switched from Eon to Npower sign-online 21.
I am using around 2000 units a year.
With Eon, I was being charged (as of Jan 2011 on track and save 6)
    720*20.656 = 148.72
    1280*11.408 = 146.24

    total = 294.74

I'm now on Npower sign online 21. From Oct 1, my prices are:
    18.1*720 = 130.32
    1280*9.79 = 125.31
    A total of 225.63
With the 100 pound dual fuel discount, this is 125.31.

    Oops - sorry - this indeed isn't 60%.

I switched to this tarrif as uswitch correctly identified the dual fuel rebate.

Well that is true but....there is no obligation and no charge to the consumer.

    Really?

I'd think about that one again!

There may be no direct charge, but there's certainly a hell of an indirect charge we all pay.

    .

This indeed isn't 100% accurate accounting I'd bet.

Looks very selective to me to give an invalid view of your saving from switching.
