Just a quick thought...He could do a little part time job, or do a carboot sale stall which would raise money to enable repayments of loan..other people doing access courses must have the same dilema but they are still doing the courses??....
is the 'very little funding' intended for people who have been carefully vetted/certain catagories of people, or having to meet certain conditions, I wonder? Or is it that they are to be discouraged as the government perhaps can't tax them at this stage...?0 -

I have no idea what you're on about in your last paragraph but very little FE is funded for adults and never has been.
Most young adults on Access courses live with their parents and work part time to pay their keep (if necessary) and spending money. Older people are usually lone parents or funded by a working partner.
Deliberately putting yourself in a position where you'll have a loan to pay whilst studying at this level is just silly.0 -
On point above, although adult FE not being funded is the case, there was a lot of fee remission for those with the right benefit evidence (which has now gone!).
And if our OP needs to pay for GCSEs, they'll need to pay for their Access too!0 -

Not necessarily.
The 3 GCSEs aren't a full level 2 qualification but the Access will be level 3. If the OP doesn't already have a level 3 qualification and is under 26 then s/he won't have to pay course fees.0 -
You do not need any formal qualifications to do an access course, you have to be showing that you can work towards level one in maths and level 2/3 in english at your interview, which are pretty easy assesments. When you are offered a place you work towards level 2 in maths if you dont have it already, and level 2 or 3 in english, and even can do a level 2 science if you do not have it already.
If you are under 24 and you have no previous full level 3 qualifications you are allowed a remission of fees.
So you shouldnt need to do any gcse's before an access course.

True, but the fact they needs to pay for their GCSEs suggests they have a L3 or are over 25. To me it doe anyway!
Assj, some places insist on L2's in English and maths prior to entry onto the Access, especially if the HE course demands it. And if he has no formal quals at all (in particular English and maths) often you will be asked to correct that beforehand.0 -
