If you decide to hang on to the Tesco card you can set up a range of text/email alerts on-line, to automatically warn you that you are approaching you credit limit.0 -
From the Tesco site. Doesn't copy and paste very well but it gives you the gist.
Set up and manage alerts
You can use alerts to keep up to date with your account.
You can add or amend your account alerts here. You can choose to have these sent by email or by text to your mobile.

You have gone over your limit by a very substantial amount. Why should they refund the fee? Why should they contact you to tell you that your are near to your limit? Why should they stop you spending? If you need to be stopped from spending, the card should be taken away.
Rather than complaining you should be THANKING THEM for allowing the transactions to go through or whould you rather the inconvenience of DECLINED transactions? You are lucky that your account has not been cancelled. When you say 'I am sorely tempted to pay this off and close the account' you imply that you have still not paid the over limit amount. I suggest that you do this as soon as possible to avoid doing any further harm to your credit rating.0 -
If it's advice you're looking for, pay off what you owe and keep a closer eye on your balance in future. I can understand not knowing to the nearest fiver - but £900 !!!!!!!!!!!!!0
