EON Economy 18
Options
I am hoping E.ON Company Representative Malc is listening out as we need saving!!!
Just (well OK a month ago - that's how long we have been bashing on with this) bought a flat in Suffolk and the previous owner signed up with another electricity provider whereupon the heating and hot water supply was cut off.
The flat has heating set up for economy 18 and all we want to do is get EON to take over the supply and get the meter working again.
Currently we have a meter that supplies night and day tariff which works normally but the meter supplying the hot water cylinder (which also feeds the underfloor heating) is disconnected.
Numerous calls to EON later we are no closer to getting them to take on the business. Most representatives we talk to have no knowledge of this tariff and eventually we have been promised a call from an Adam Cooper who does know about it, except he never calls. A bizzare situation of us feeling like EON don't want the business!!!!!
Is there a direct phone number to call EON to talk to someone who knows about this tariff and can set the wheels in motion???

From when I used to work at Eon its not a common tariff but they used to refer to it as Redring on there systems - Its quite a complex billing account and normally requires a 'Specialist'. To get the meter re-installed might cost you some money and I would imagine a bit of footwork from E.on with there meter operators.
I remember when I left and went to work for British Gas I still used to get calls from my old managers at E.on asking for help on billing it - That was 4 years ago!
Hopefully its improved since then!0 -
You wouldn't think it so complicated!! But apparently it is!!0
-
It is pretty complicated compared to other tariffs though - when I first saw Redring I thought it was a commercial tariff due to the number of rates that it has.
Anyways I am sure the E.on Reps on here are adequately trained on the billing system / redring & installation and removal of the required meters. I made a Off Peak timing tool as well and wonder if that is still in use there - That could tell any agent there the Off peak times on any meter from the Data Flows they received from the meter operators - If it is they should be able to give you the E18 times when its on the cheap rate of electric - From what I remember there is a block overnight where it is cheap for all electric used and the remainder can only be used by your heating system only.
What meter do you have there at the moment if you don't mind me asking? Is it Economy 7?0 -
Hi gatenergy
This is a bit of a tricky one, in that, we're not actually your supplier.
A lot will depend on what was done when the original Economy 18 meter was disconnected.
Not all suppliers can support Economy 18 meters and I suspect the new provider may have fallen into this category. It sounds as though the original metering set up was replaced with a standard Economy 7 meter.
Sorry to use jargon here, but Economy 18 meters need two Meter Point Administration Numbers (MPAN) instead of the usual one number. One MPAN is for normal usage whilst the second covers the water and heating.
If, when the Economy 18 was removed, the second MPAN was also disconnected then this would need to be re-established before Economy 18 could be re-fitted. At this stage, only your current supplier could arrange this.
I always recommend customers thinking of changing from hybrid metering set ups, like Economy 18, arrange for an independent approved electrician to check over their system first.
Often, remedial work is needed before the change can go ahead as Economy 18 will be wired directly into the water/heating circuits at properties.
Before going back, I would certainly recommend you have your set up checked out by an electrician first. Further work may need to be done.
If you do now have Economy 7, then any supplier will be able to take this on. They can then start the process of applying for a second MPAN and replacing the meter.
Apart from E.ON, though, I'm not sure what other suppliers support Economy 18.
Sorry to be so vague gatenergy but not too sure what your current situation is.

Malc
npower support Economy 18/ Super Tariff. I do believe none of the other big six do.0 -
E.on obviously do as well otherwise there would't be on E.on Rep commenting on here.
Also worth nothing that SSE also support Economy 10 as well.0 -
Scottish Power support this tariff too, it's called Economy 2000.0

So fundamentally you have an E7 system not an E18 system because the water heating & underfloor part is completely disconnected [ is it ? ]. Or do you get a tank of hot water [ E7 ] whch you can use but the underfloor part only is disconnected ?
- if it was not isolated the water storage cylinder part [ not the underfloor ] would charge up at night on cheap rate
- - - and both the water and underfloor would run 3 times during the day at the E18 rate
- if it is isolated your starting point is a sparkie, its complicated and a little understood wiring
- - - assuming the original wiring and CU has been left in situ, but just decommissioned - that will save you a fortuneDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Redring is something of a tricky one for suppliers and its quoted at 18 hours however this is actually incorrect as the signal sent to the meter actually works for 17.5 hrs. Since the meter is a radio telemeter suppliers can't easily access this data though.
You need 2 mpans though as the eon rep says but with it being a radio telemeter, it will be one meter but your property needs to be set up to a day, night and heat set of circuits first.
Be aware that its a non standard tariff so deals and switching will be hard afterwards.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0
