New PC - warrantee questions

About a week ago, I picked up a PC from PC World. It was clearance merchandise so I got a bit of a bargain, I reckon. I didn't take out the whole monthly extended warrantee thing because I know it's got 12 months warrantee on it. I know the scheme there gives you a service, accidental damage, upgrade installation stuff and so forth, but I can do all that stuff for myself. I did look at Domestic and General but they seem to charge £5.99 a month minimum vs PC World's £4.99.

My question is, has anyone here taken out one of these monthly warrantee things with PC World? How did getting your PC fixed / replaced goes? And if they gave you vouchers - as their site apparently says they might - did you actually get a PC as good as the one you got? I've heard some people say you can take out the warrantee thing at the end of the first year - is this true? Or are there other companies that do a PC warrantee cheaper?

It's not so much that I'm bothered about any fancy service, my prime concern is being able to get a PC as good as the one I've got if it does break outside of the 12 months. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Its almost never worth buying these things - they're all but a con. You are protected by the sale of goods act which basically says that a product should be fit for the purpose it was sold and should last a reasonable length of time. Now whilst this time period might be a few months for a light bulb, it is reasonable to expect a computer to last several years. So unless the waranty gives you home repair or a replacement whilst the computer is being repaired you are paying for something that you already get under uk law.

As long as you don't open the base unit up or take an axe to it, then the 1 year warrenty should cover you if things go to pot.
