Any shop is private property, you have no absaloute right to be there. You have an assumed right which can be withdrawn immediately for any reason the store owner/manager chooses at any time.

You can apply the same rules to your own property if you like.

You are, of course absolutely right. Get that, but, there are millions utilising their "assumed" rights in Mr T's (and Mr T's would be bankrupt without them ;) )

I don't think anyone is disputing that, just the completely wild and false claim that it is "illegal to check prices" as for being on the premises there is an explicit invitation to enter until such time as that permission/invitation is withdrawn it remains.

why would tesco be worried anyway , they aremaking £billions as it is , someone comparing prices of a tin of beans or whatever it was is not going to affect their turnover or profit
    Absolutely!

However, it is not purely down to a tin of beans; customer service also has a role to play and the OP is highlighting where that falls down. For those who value the human qualities above (purely) the pricing mechanism, the scenario does sound rather heavy/paranoid!

If somebody says you are doing something illegal, why not ask them what it is, and then ask them to call the police?

You could try saying it is breaking the law to knowingly lie to somebody that they are breaking the law. :)

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have been followed round Tesco on more than one occasion as I write down prices on my shopping list instead of ticking an item off. Makes it easy to check the receipt at the end of the shop in order to see if I've been overcharged. Security hate seeing people go in with a paper and pen and linger at a label.

Also recently had a run in with a clothing staff member, and their manager, who insisted Tesco policy was to be adhered to, despite the fact Tesco policy ran roughshod over Sale of Goods Act. A faulty top should be replaced or refunded. Don't tell me because I bought a faulty item at £2.50 instead of £5 that my only option was to pay another £2.50 to replace it with an identical item, and I that certainly could not have £2.50 cash refund as I'd washed it. The washing identified the fault.

It would be a cold day in hell before I completely stop shopping in Tesco, but they no longer have my complete loyalty in the same way they did 5 years ago. I've had too many run ins with too many staff who think that Tesco policy is law.

It may be so. But. If they've invited you to visit, surely they are obliged to treat you properly.
  • I've had security give me a ear-bashing for photographing soup before... hadn't expected there to be an issue tbh!
You were only killing time and it'll kill you right back
  • What a laugh. If some store manager came upto me saying writing prices down was illegal, I'd have said, "well you better phone the police now then, here use my phone."
