Macauley Kitchens - Bankrupt

  • Hi all,
We ordered a kitchen through McAuleys back before the summer and paid over £5k of a deposit by cheque. We got the same call last week and the same offer to sign a new contract with McAuley Interiors.
I wasn't happy but obviously a bit relieved by the offer to discount the price of the new contract so that we didn't lose our deposit. We arranged to call into the Belfast showroom today (Saturday 24th) - which i was told on Tuesday would be open from 9-5.30 and the place was deserted with an A4 page on the door saying 'this showroom is now closed'.

I can't get any answer from their phone number and am really concerned now that the company and the Interiors company have ceased trading and we have lost the large deposit and have to start all over again with a differnt company.

Can anyone shed any more light on the situation please?
    Thanks
  • Hi,
I too had paid a deposit with McAuley Kitchens, though in my case by credit card. When I was told that the company had gone into liquidation and reopened as McAuley Interiors I went to the showroom to speak to a company representative before resigning a contract. They told me that the problem had been with their bank and overdraft issues and that the Belfast end of the company was still profitable. The showroom seemed quite busy and there were people discussing orders. I signed a contract but paid no more money and will not do so unless I get my kitchen. I think my credit card company can still make a claim against Mcauley kitchens for my deposit. If I hear anything more from either of these companies I will post but I doubt it. I suspect some creditors have moved fast and caught up with them

    Hi,

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Macauley Interiors ceased trading as of Friday 23rd. :(

We got the name of the company dealing with the administration. When we contacted them we were told we were not listed as a creditor but they weren't surprised as they'd had a lot of customers on who they did not have listed !!!!

Company is FPM Accountants, Recovery and Restructuring, based in Belfast.

Have to give a plug to M&S Credit Card, I contacted them and they couldn't have been more helpful, already have my claim form and had the whole process explained to me, so we should be ok on the deposit front. :T
  • We ordered a kitchen from McAuleys to be fitted first week in June but was never finished, as requested we had to pay 95% before delivery, today we received a letter from bank of Ireland looking full payment of £18k, we know we still owe final 5% but are worried because we have holes in walls and leaking sink, we have been trying to resolve these problems for weeks but now that company has closed should we still pay the final balance cos contract states not to pay until happy with the work. Will the bank be sympathetic to us and were do we stand with the guarantee, I know we're in a better position than other people but it's still very worrying.

Did McAuley Interiors not just become a company in August of this year?

Very sad news about any company closing and the knock on effect it has on so many.

I hope those who have paid money etc get sorted out quickly.

Having worked for WMcA many years ago and been treated really poorly - all I can say is karma ...
  • I'm in the same boat, albeit I haven't lost as much. Has anyone heard anymore news on this?
  • Hi I also have a part-finished kitchen.

Others may be interested in the formal Insolvency notice

    Google "McAuley Kitchens Insolvency"
and follow the "Belfast Telegraph Classified" link.
(sorry the site won't let me put in the link).

I have also experienced the McAuley Kitchens / McAuley Interiors confusion, but both companies now appear to have gone bust.

I think we all need to register as creditors with the administrator
as they don't seem to know that we exist.

I agree with the administrator part, we've been contacted by them again checking the name that the contract was in as they can't find our contract with Macauleys. It all seems to be a bit of a mess.

KitchenDisaster (and others) sorry about the trouble with your kitchens. Re: the 95% payment you made, I'd be writing back to the bank saying you won't be paying the last 5% as your kitchen was never completed. Your guarantee is worthless with a company that no longer exists too. The bank should be refunding you for the amount of work (is it more than 5%) that is outstanding!
  • Like Bosco1 I too paid by cheque (over £3,000) and by what we heard from the bank (who were looking for the remaining money of a kitchen I dont have) and liquidators is that the outcome of the small people like us is quite bleak and virtually no chance of getting our money back.
