Problems with Playstation 3 after System Update 3.70

On 01/09/11 I was happily playing games on my old style 'fat' 80gb PS3 with no issues whatsoever. Infact I've had no issues with it since I bought it in 2008 ... until now.
The following day, I switched my console on again to find there was a new system update to download from Sony (version 3.70). So, as I have done since the beginning, I downloaded the update. When it had finished, I put the same game in as I had been playing the day before only to find it wouldn't read the disc. Surely it was just a dirty CD or lens? No. After using a lens cleaner to clean the lens, I tried EVERY game, blu-ray disc and even music CD's in my console. It woudn't read any of them. I then restored the factory settings which took all night only to find it still wouldn't work after this.
I then phoned Sony UK Support and was told it was definitely not a firmware issue but a hardware issue and they gave me some basic troubleshooting tips (they had already been tried but I tried them again). Nothing worked.
After doing a week of research on the internet, I find that I am not alone in this situation. I again telephoned Sony today and explained my situation, that the console was working fine until the system update. They would not accept that the update has somehow corrupted my console. I was told that it must be down to wear and tear and it wasn't Sony's issue.
I refuse to pay £110 for a refurbished model as I see this as a software download issue and therefore nothing to do with me. I am currently awaiting a callback from someone at Sony but in the meantime I would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced this issue and if they have reported/resolved it.
Thanks for reading.
