Ebay Vs Amazon Marketplace Vs Gumtree HELP

Hi all.

I have two new unwanted laptops I want to sell. I have recently sold some books/CDs/DVDs etc on Amazon but since a laptop is a higher priced item, and once selling and commission fees are accounted for, which of the big three selling websites would be recommended?

One of the laptops I have is not listed on Amazon. I would need to set up an (I think) ''Amazon services account'' to upload my own product description page. I've checked that if selling the laptop for a hopeful £650 (I bought it for £800 earlier this year), which would in turn guarantee me £579.34 once Amazon's fees and such are accounted for. This equates to their fees and such being 10.9%.

If I decided to sell on Ebay, can someone with some experience of their commission and fees notify me of their rough charges? Would they be similar to Amazon's fee, for example? If Ebay turn out to be cheaper I may advertise the laptops there with Buy-It-Now prices, rather than through their auctions (are Buy-It-Now items included in the free listing promo currently ongoing?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I reckon eBay would be best, paypal would take 3.4% + 20p, although really the guy to speak to for laptops is hammyman

I would seriously doubt you would get £650 for a 2nd hand laptop that was £800 new.

What was top spec 6 months ago is now average spec.

Check ebay's completed listings for a price.

eBay Buy-It-Nows are not included in Free Listing promotions but on the other hand they cost only 40p to list, which is barely going to be noticeable on the final value fees you will incur.

I think I would check Amazon's fee schedule directly, 10% or so sounds on the low side for them.

Like anyone here I think you're seriously naive about the price. For £650 I'd want a new item. Depreciation hits something massively when you take it out of the shop, never mind use it for six months (and if it's only been used for six months I'd want to know what's wrong with it that you want to sell it so soon).

Hi guys, thanks for the help. Both laptops are new and have not been used - both were bought with a discount I receive from my workplace but were sadly thrown in the cupboard and have collected dust these past few months. My intention was to use them but I'm more than happy with my current laptop, thus there's no reason to keep the other two.

Anyway, a laptop with a similar spec is listed at £750 by one company on Ebay, and they have sold 3 (of 10) at that price point, and there are other similar spec'ed laptops between £700-800, so if anything, £650 is on the low side. It is a very powerful laptop with extra's not often found in laptops, including a blu-ray writer and a powerful graphics card, and it's a Sony Vaio which hold their value well. I wouldn't say I'm naive since I work in the computer industry, and as part of my job occupation, I buy laptops, desktops and components for my company so although I say it myself, I do have a good understanding of what an item should cost and feel that £650 is still under market value. :D

I will invest more time this afternoon and decide upon what the best option(s) would be. Many thanks for the useful information. ;)
