Energy Saving Light Bulbs

I chose not to buy the led type because of the cost but also because several people had complained that the bulbs they had bought, failed within a year. In checking around I found that some cmpanies, while advertising the longevity of both cfl and led bulbs, gave only a 21 day ( or similar ) warranty. I do not know if that is legal but several cited reasons "outside of their control" for this shortened period.
This being one of the main things i tell people about LED's and i'm glad you brought it up. If the product claims to last 10 to 20 years, then why does it only come with 1 or 2 year warranty?
I wouldn't touch any LED product if it came with anything less than a 4 year warranty.0 -
Great posts everyone. Very helpful.
I was wondering if anyone is using led bulbs in normal house fittings, bayonet/screw. I'm thinking of trying out an led bulb, though pretty much all our fittings are bayonet type - had a look at philips and osram; doens't look like osram do bayonet style. So other than philips, have you any recommendations for brand? I guess the other thing is that we like quite bright light - I'd guess most of our current bulbs are 100w so the led bulbs are not going to give an equivalent light, but I like to try 'new' things and gradually 'future-proof' (well, to an extent).
Any suggestions? Many thanks#96 of the Norn Iron Club

I can't help with the bulb power... They haven't quite got to the "complete replacement" stage with LED bulbs, yet. The ones in our wall fittings are all SBC, which was more difficult to find than BC or screw cap (ES). As in most things shopping, the internet is your friend :-).
We got ours from lampspecs.co.uk, which worked out okay. But there are more than a handfull of suppliers who stock a range of LED bulbs.
As always watch the delivery charges for the NI premium - that can change things from being the best deal you can find to being worse than average...
Brand... We haven't really had any of ours in place for long enough to judge brand differences. The GU10 replacements in the kitchen are mixed brands and ages, but none of them have given any problems yet. So no data. Give it a year or two...0 -
Are energy saving light bulbs really a better option than the normal ones?Speaking for myself I find that i tend to not switch my lights on too early or watch telly with the light on.I do this because of the energy it saves by not switching on...its a pschological thing with me.I think if i had the energy saving bulbs i would use them more because i would be aware that they are saving energy. So in the end it all ends up the same in my case.Perhaps i am looking at this the wrong way.0
