WD passport - help!

Hi

I've purchased a WD Passport 500gb to use in internet cafes while I'm travelling to backup photos.

Now it works fine on my laptop, but I've just nipped to the library to try it out there and when I plugged it in a message was displayed saying that I do not have permission to install new hardware on this computer.

And the drive was not recognised, so I couln't use it.

I don't want to install anything, only use it to drag and drop - can I do that with this type of drive?

I'm not taking my laptop so need to be able to do this on public computers.

Thanks

You can't use it as you wish to use it. Whilst you have good intenet, the PC owners have to protect the network from folk wanting to load virii or other dodgy material via their PCs or network.
  • If you do it regularly you could potentially email your pictures to yourself as a backup, or do you have an ipod that you could use?

I going to be taking a lot of photos and some in raw, so I'm not sure emailing is enough. I have a flickr account which I was going to use, but just wanted an extra back up.

I'm now actually thinking about travelling with my laptop. I'm away for 6 months and can appreciate it will useful but I don't want to take TOO much stuff with me.

    Decisions decisions :undecided

Netbooks are cheap enough , local sims offer similar rates to what we have in the UK, FGS don't be using your UK sim abroad, there are already too many whinge stories of high roaming charges of which (quite rightly) there is little sympathy :o

My netbook often follows me on trips abroad, reasonable internet useage, often comes in at around a £1 /day even in the Caribbean
  • I use a PVR for this, you can bridge it with a camera and transfer the pictures straight over, mine is 100GB, an old Archos AV700. Mind you, if I had a netbook I would probably have used that! Won't a Raw image degrade eash time it is transferred though? Never used raw myself, but would have thought that degradation from that would be worse than you get in jpeg, and if your shooting in raw you must want to do a fair bit with them?

  • wasn't aware that RAW degrades when its transferred, will check that out.

TBH I'm quite new to photography but was advised to shoot in RAW + JPEG and then I've got more options for processing, which I'll probably do when I get home
