I took a job with an agency but recently got offered interveiw (with a crb sent off) at another care home.

I do not want to give up the agency work and plan to work both.

My question is, the p45 says "if you do not wish your new employer to know your past employment (or something like that) please contact us).

Now is their a way I can do this with my p46. Like to stop either company knowing im working for the other? but still pay the right tax.

My other question is (not related to tax) how do ppl who do work 2 jobs cope? ive seen it done. Does it just require plenty of rest and determination.

Im saving for my own house if it helps

Also I am 19 years of age, don't know if that makes alot of difference

Long term, where do you expect to earn the most money on a regular basis? Could your personal allowance (£7475 in this tax year) be expected to be used up in your current agency work?

I haven't checked by looking at the P46 form but I don't think you have to name who else you work for if you have two jobs at the same time. Have you looked at the P46 form to see whether you have to do that?

I've just checked the form and confirm it doesn't ask you to name your other employer. You would just select C.

Not seen a p46 yet. Agency could or could not pass the 7,000. I could be doing 16 hours one week, 48 the next then have no work the next.

    Thanks for your help.
  • As in my amended post (#2), you don't have to name the other employer(s) on a P46.

You can ask HMRC is split your tax allowance between the two employers.

However if you are likely to be working more than 48 hours a week on average in the two jobs combined, you need to opt out of the WT regs relating to 48 hours. I expect both your employers (especially the agency) will have asked you to do that in any case.

Not likley to work more in both. Basically the agency phone up every 2 weeks to check your availability. So I was planning to work some of the days I am not rota'd to work in the care home.

Am I best giving the P45 to the care home and the P46 to the agency?

One other question I have for certain reasons is, is there a time limit between starting employment and handing in your p45/6? would I beable to hand my p45/6 in to the employers 2 weeks after commencing employment after I have had time to sort everything out?
  • To add the agency work will be part-time, once I start a full-time job in the home

Wow. There's a whole load of assuming the care home won't expect set hours from you. Also you aren't considering the Working Time Directive which means you cannot work 7 days a week.

I checked it isn't set hours it's on a month rota basis and you go by that, like my last nursing home.

I would leave 1 day off to relax with, I would just keep the agency very part-time

example if I did 4 days in the home one week. I would probably do 1 shift for the agency.

The agency call you every fortnight and you tell them when you are available. Example... I am working monday tuesday wednesday one week. So I am only available on friday saturday or sunday. Leaving thursday off.

But my original question was how do I go about the p46 :/
  • Hi, By submitting a P46 to an e/yer, I personally think that would indicate to them that you have another job anyway, otherwise you would be giving in a P45?

The WTD does not apply to employees, only to employers. An individual employer must operate in accordance with the laws on hours and rest periods, but there is nothing at all that says that employees cannot take on other work during their "rest periods". So yes, an employee can actually work 365 days a year provided that they are not all for the same employer. There are other considerations though, from the employees point of view, in that the WTD is there for a reason, and circumventing it by having multiple employers and not taking proper rest may have an impact on health and/or performance - both of which, but especially the latter, may become of concern to an employer.

I do understand it could cause exhausion. But it will be short-term working two jobs, for one year.

I thought working 2 jobs, despite the tax, would help me rake in more cash quicker
