It very much depends on what it is you want from them and how much they think you'll stand for. Occupational health and environmental monitoring are expensive 300-500 per day but just getting help with risk assessments or some training is quite reasonable say 200-300 per day. Prices are negotiable so don't accept the first offer. It's often cheaper to use an independent rather than a large company, but the quality is more variable. Check out the IOSH site http://www.iosh.co.uk/
Best wishes

As an H&S profesisonal I recommend that you ensure that the person you use has the following letters after their name either
MIOSH
or CMIOSH
This will ensure you get a fully qualified safety professional, ask to see their Membership card as unfortunately there are a few "consultants" out there who have had some training and some experience but are by no means qualified to be dispensing advice on high risk activities.
Obviously I have no idea what you need (Policy, Risk Assessments, Method Statements etc) but the Institute of Occuaptional Health and Safety will be able to help you. Call them on Monday on 0116 257 3100 and see their website https://www.iosh.co.ukThe best way to escape a problem is to solve it :j0 -
Thanks Save4,
The Guy we spoke to yesterday (fri) had AIIRSM, after his name. Something about Institute of Risk management. Seemed clued up.
We want a policy statement, risk assesments and the new fire regs complied with.

You need very little qualification (just 10 days training) in H&S to be AIIRSM so BEWARE. As for the new Fire Regs make sure your COnsultant has at least a NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management (this is a 9-day course qualification specialising in Fire) OR IS MIOSH/CMIOSH.
Just want to be sure you get thebest advice for your moneyThe best way to escape a problem is to solve it :j0 -
10 days training seems to be a fair amount to me.
I am no expert but just how much training does someone really need? This is what I am wary of and the reason I posted here it always seems to me that H&S people try to perpetuate the myth that it is some kind of black art. The guy seemed to know the score, had PI insurance, is registered with an institute and had a load of references.
How much roughly would you be charging for doing 3 seperate sites? Risk assessments and Fire Risk assessments?0 -
Anyone answer?
Roughly what should I be looking at for 3 seperate sites to be assessed and then the assessments written up?

The cost would surely be reflected by the level of risk posed by the business you operate...office situation vs nuclear site......
In my experience the best risk assesments are done by the staff who work in the premises as they know what actually happens. Health and Safety these days is regarded too much as a paper excercise and once you've paid your money to a consultant the resultant literature gets relegated to a dusty folder on a dusty shelf which no one looks at.
Take ownership - do it your self...or delegate to another employee. https://www.hse.gov.uk has lots of useful info.0
