Good Quality - Reasonable Priced-Small Chunked-Wet Cat food recommendations Please

One of my Cats (we have 6) has sadly had to have most of her teeth removed due to Gum problems. So she is just left with her canine teeth and one lonely incisor on the lower jaw, So she will now have to solely be on wet food.

We have always fed our Cats a high quality biscuit (which is down all day) with a slightly lower quality wet food one a day. This way we have been able to keep the price reasonable but feed them a good quality diet

Now obviously with this one cat she needs to have a higher quality wet food as that is her only food which has small pieces (as she cant cut or grind food). She is a young pedigree cat (only 3 1/2) so its sad that such a young cat has had those problems.

So any recommendations of a reasonably priced good quality food with small pieces? Just to add due to where I live we have no shops like pets at home etc so most of our Animal supplies are bought online.

TIA

Oli

  • Ahhh Oliver, poor wee soul.

Have you tried anything like Gourmet?

My wee cat will only eat pate style foods (she won't eat anything with chunks at all). They also do terrine style & others with tiny chunks (and I mean tiny) which are a bit more solid but still easily picked up/swallowed if mashed up a bit.

They're not the cheapest on the block (RRP 46p for 85g) but I tend to bulk buy when on offer (got 18 for £5.40 = 30p at PAH recently).

Have you checked whether PAH deliver to your area? (They come here and I'm pretty rural and around 30 miles from the nearest store). They usually do free delivery over £29 so again I bulk buy to get this.

I've been looking for an alternative (and hopefully cheaper option) and have just ordered some Bozita which gets really good reviews.

There are loads of flavours / types so you may find something to suit all your cats' different needs to make the order up to free delivery (have a look at http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/cat-supplies/cat-food/cat-food-pouches/bozita-cat-food/all-products.html to see them all).

I've just ordered 1 of each flavour + a couple of extra bits to get the £29 free delivery with them - mine are really fussy so want to try them all). You can also get at Zoo+ (orders over £19 are free delivery) but they don't sell them individually which is why I went with Seapets this time http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/canned_cat_food_pouches/bozita/206761

I haven't got it yet but it should come next week so I can let you know the consistency then if that would help?

Thanks very much. yes would love to know the consistency of Bozita. PAH do deliver but they charge extra here so would have to be a big order to justify it. I have been looking at Gourmet never tried it so will pick some up at Tesco to try. At present been trying sheba desire even though she can eat it she is struggling a wee bit with some of the chunks.

Just had a look on Amazon and Gourmet is a good price there (and free delivery)

I have a cat with very few teeth and he loves the Gourmet -small chunks and pate. But he does manage to eat dry too. He just swallows the small kibble whole!

If you are sad like me and sit and watch cats when they eat, a lot of dry kibble is eaten whole or chewed only slightly. At least with mine anyway! :rotfl:

OP - if your cat enjoys the dry food she has been eating, another alternative would be to moisten it with warm water, which will then make it softer and easier for her to eat. Not sure how fussy she is.

Just out of interest, what breed is she? And are dental problems common with that breed do you know?

Funnily enough I'd just popped back to say that!:D

When my old boy got older and started to struggle with his dry I did this.

Another fan of Bozita here - I buy the chunks in jelly, and they are around 1 - 1.5cm wide I would say, so fairly small. They are also very soft (a bit like meatballs), so I wouldn't imagine your cat would have any problems. I buy the 18 mixed pack and another 6 pack (I'm rotating the 6s) to qualify for free postage from Zooplus. My cats love it, and will nag and nag for their evening meal (they only get it in the evenings - biscuits are down all day).

I think they also do a pate and chunks in gravy.
  • My friend's cat has no teeth at all because of gingivitis because of FIV, and she's perfectly happy munching on dry food now that her gums are fully healed.

Daisy is quite partial to the Felix mixed tins in jelly, the consistancy is quite sloppy if the jelly gets warm & melts, almost like a terrine.

I have seen her try to eat the dry food but it just falls out of her mouth. This also happens with larger pieces of wet food.

She's a Ragdoll. Dental problems aren't a common problem more than normal as far as I know. We have to others. One a 5 year old who has teeth and gums he could use in a toothpaste add. We also have our little old lady who is 9 she is missing a couple of teeth but nothing major.

I do still have some worries though as 3 months ago she had a lot of teeth out but was left with some molars etc. Then we noticed last week that the problem had reoccured which is when the rest were removed which left her with the Canines and the one lonely incisor. Our vet this time was quite aggressive in approach as we dont want her to have to have another OP. Its just sad that such a young cat (3 1/2) has had to have such major work

Thanks for everyone's help. I'm going to have a look at Gourmet this week as I can but the odd packet to try. If that doesn't work I may have to risk getting a larger order of Bozita

Here's a couple of pictures of her

She is a beautiful cat :j Shame about her problems at her age.

I hope you find something to suit her soon, I am sure you will as there is so much choice out there. ;)
