Quick Question - Weight Allowances

Hi, just a quick question - I'm hoping somebody out there can solve this week long argument between my parents lol!
We are flying with Thompson and have a luggage allowance of 20kg (each).
Is this per person, or per bag?
For example... If there is 5 of us travelling, we have 100kg allowance between us... Can we split this?
E.G.
Person 1: 10kg
Person 2: 25kg
Person 3: 25kg
Person 4: 21kg
Person 5: 19kg
Is this allowed? Or is the allowance PER BAG? So that we would each have to carry 20kg.
Sorry for wittering on, I just wanted to make the question as clear as possible!
TIA

Have you checked thomson website?
IMO the most it will be is 23kg per bag, I am almost sure you will not be allowed 25kg in any bag as most airlines will limit bag sizes to 23kg without paying extra.
I am sure the website will tell you if you can pool the allowance0 -
It's per person, have a look at the small print on your holiday invoice.
You could take 25KG but they'll charge you big time for it!0 -
I went with Thompson a fortnight ago. They allowed our bag weighing 24kg outwards, but inwards made us buy another bag to check in and swap things over. They said security meant a single bag could not be above 23kg, although they usually give a 1kgs leeway, and that we couldn't pay to check in more in a single bag.
You can pool allowances like you want too, though - if there is 5 of you, you can take 5 bags weighing any amount up to a total of 100kg, as long as no bag weighs more then 23kg.

The 23kg limit in weight per bag is for H&S handling apparently. Although when we checked in at Luton last month we were told we could go up to 25kg per bag. So safer under 23 as it appears a bit vague even between Thomson staff.
The problem is that they allow you to buy extra baggage allowance in 5kg amounts so their old rules would make a waste of 2kg (splitting luggage over other bags would mean the extra would be wasted).
You can pool the luggage but if you want to go to 25kg I'd have something in writing from Thomson with you.
Regarding the extra allowance, if anyone does buy it online after booking make sure you take the confirmation email, of our past 3 trips it has have failed to go through to the booking and we were asked to pay extra, until I smiled and showed my booking reference.0 -
Since when is the H&S bag limit 23Kg? I thought it was 32Kg? Maybe it's different in some countries...
As for pooling, RyanAir don't allow it but most other airlines do. We usually travel with 2 25Kg'ish bags between 4 of us.0 -
If there are 5 of you flying with Thomsons 20kg each you can pool them together, so you have 100kg to split how you like but Thomson have the restriction of 23kg per case so how you do it other than those restrictions is up to you.
Zagfles, different airlines have different restrictions as Thomas cook will let you put 30kg in 1 case, but thomsons is def 23kg max.0 -

Thanks - can't believe this is an H&S limit though - since the same baggage handlers are going to be handling all airlines' baggage... Sounds like jumping on the "extra charges" bandwagon...0 -

There is actually no limit http://www.hse.gov.uk/contact/faqs/manualhandling.htm#is however it would come under the duty of care aspect therefore letting the companies set their own figure or using industry standards. Some airlines did use this to reduce the weight you can take under the guise of safety - the fact that they could charge extra for more weigh was just a side effect of this and I'm sure it had no bearing on the decision.Totally Debt Free & Mortgage Free Semi retired and happy0
