Buying house with asbestos garage roof

As a kid i smashed the local derelict garage roofs made of corrugated asbestos,,,it makes me shudder to think about,
In the boiler shop at a steam locomotive works near me, the fitters used to kip on the stuff if the night shift was quiet - it was woven into thick "blankets" which would then be wrapped around the boilers when fitting the lagging and cladding. Apparently it was very comfortable in the lagging store
At least it wasn't the blue or brown variety, just white. Not that that would have made much difference, the issues weren't known about back then.0 -
Getting a report from a specialist is probably the way to go.Snootchie Bootchies!0

We had the same problem and when we checked our local council website, it told us that we could take it down ourselves, with advice such as watering it down before moving it, wrapping it up before moving, etc, and where we could dispose of it legally. It only cost us max £200 to dispose of our garage roof about 6 years ago and we got a certificate confirming the safe disposal, which we have to keep for so many years.
It was a similar situation for us when we wanted to demolish our garage (different one to that in previous post) 2 years ago. I paid a couple of friends to take the corrugated asbestos cement roof sheets off (I have back problems so couldn't do it myself). They wore head to toe protective clothing and suitable face mask. I paid council approved contractors £240 approx (larger than average garage) to bag the sheets and remove them.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
Five years ago I had a double concrete garage with asbestos roof,I sold the garage for £200 via free adds buyer to dismantle and collect. Now replaced with a triple garage 9" block and rendered with a tiled roof cost me 10k to do.0

Asbestos isn't a problem unless it is in dust form - if you can prevent the sheets becoming dust, they are no hazard. For reassurance, use a facemask and rubber gloves. Hose them down thoroughly inside and out, you can rub grease along the broken seam edge if needs be, just be aware of not breaking the sheets as you remove them, and wrap them well in a large plastic sheet before moving them. Ask your local council for details of where to take them for safe disposal.0

well i find out a bit of interesting bit of information on this such thing yesterday.
My next door neighbour decided to demolish his garage complete with asbestos panel roof with a digger! just smashed the roof into smitherins!! i called emergency environmental health line, and i was informed, they cant do anything anout it as it is a private residence. he admitted it wasnt best practice but nothing he could!!!! he also added if it had been a business they would of been heavily fined. an !!!! of a law!
so i now have asbestos dust all over my garden and no recourse to getting it looked at and cleaned if necessary. i would have to pay for it all myself. I know if i ever demolish my garage, i would make sure i do it on a day the winds blowing in his direction!0
