scottish power or british gas
Hello,
Have just moved into a new flat and have always been in places that were supplied by British Gas but this time tried to set up an account with them and after a month I'm still not registered on the gas account and told that I can't be on the tariff i want until that is sorted.
went on comparison sites and a few say Scottish power is cheaper but have heard that they tend to set DD high and I'm a low user and limited money running up a load of credit to get it back later isn't really something I want. Is this really the case.
Basically is it worth taking the risk to go with Scottish Power and leave British Gas behind?

You have to first register with the supplier(s) that supply the property.
Then you can change supplier. Use a comparison site. Unless you have reasons to choose otherwise, take the one that offers the lowest price for your situation."Now to trolling as a concept. .... British gas keep saying they are going to talk to the IT department but this is the third time they have said that after give us a few days to sort it after getting a tone of letters regarding info i had sent.
Not happy with their service, though never had another supplier in the places i have lived so am actually a little nervous about switching as never have done it before but know it might be best option. How easy is it?0 -
Easy use a comparison site, I imagine neither of those two company'e will be the cheapest, probably edf0

Switching takes about 15 minutes via a com site and then a cashback site.
But as already pointed out, until you register with the existing supplier, you can't go to another one, be it BG or someone else. You are already in a deemed account with the current supplier, so speak to them.
Ths is presumably why BG can't register you.
What matters is the total cost paid, not what your DD is set at.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
According to most of the sites I went to npower then Scottish power was cheapest.
But have had friends switch to npower and they do nothing but complain about the way they bill.
But personally never done it myself so am a bit nervous about it incase the BG problems start again.0 -
But your BG problems appear to result from you failing to register with your current supplier first. Who is your existing supplier? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

was with british gas but looking at the meters they were originally supplied by scottish power (well the electricity meter was) so think the people before me switched.0
-
It's not relevant what it says on the meter, you need to call and find out.
You keep saying you were with BG, but if that was at the last property it is irrelevant, you can't transfer that account over, you must register with the existing supplier at the new property.
You cannot switch away, because you don't have an account to switch from.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I know that the last property's I was in is technically irrelevant it is just to explain that BG is the only supplier I have experience with.
As for registering - BG customer service states they can see my account as being in the process of completion however as there is an IT glitch which means it they won't change my tariff from anything but Standard as I'm not properly registered but am in their system.
hence the question about how easy it is to switch.0 -
I have been with Scottish Power now for almost 4 years.Never had a problem and their website is easy to use. When i recently checked on prices, compared to the tariff i am on now, there was nothing came close to beating it.So although they were the first to put prices up,they are certainly not the worst now,and i think their custoner service beats British Gas by a mile.0
