I go into "Run", type "telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl" then a box appears saying "Connecting To towel.blinkenlights.nl" then it disapears and nothing else happens. Am I missing something?

But, clearly not doing spelling. Don’t worry, I’m not having a go; my spelling and typing are often appalling, and I’m a lot older than you.

It isnt added to XP telnet if my memory serves me right is a old way for pcs to connect to one another. I seen it before, but still good to see. EDIT thought is came before internet

Yes you're right I was just told that by a couple of people I said to do it to over MSN :)
There’s a telnet client progam available for just about every operating system ever made. You just have to have one that has the ability to go back and change what’s already been displayed. This is, it’s not going to work terribly well with an original Teletype machine. :)

That's what I call a 'quality freebie'. Very 'old skool'.:)

Don't worry about telnet not being secure in this case. All you are doing is connecting to a machine and it's sending you some text then disconnecting (same as what happens when you view a web page).

When they say it's insecure they mean that technical people who have control of the computer network between your machine and towel.blinkenlights.nl (such as your internet provider) can see the text that is being sent (if they choose to do so).

But they can also do the same with email and normal web pages (ie. http:// pages) -- which is why email and normal web pages are classified as insecure too.

Telnet is still used in many places, though many people now use SSH instead (which is the telnet equivalent of https web pages).
