She can't pay the charges off as they're payable on a set date, but she/you can minimise the interest payable by funding the required amount (if not a little more) ASAP. They may as a gesture of goodwill waive the charges/interest upon knowing you want the account closed providing you speak to the 'right' person.

    Inevitably. NO SCAM !!
  • thank you exel1966 for quick reply , i have been sitting in bed worrying about it . i will go to bank in the morning and pay money into her account and try to get the charges dropped or try to cut a deal , she is normaly very good with her bank and never gets charges .

They won't speak to you about it as you're not her. You can obviously pay money in.

Closing the account is a bad thing to do when there are charges outstanding. If you put in enough money to get the account into credit, you can then try and get them to drop the charges. Once this is done you can close the account and get any credit amount back.

Reason being is that they are unlikely to help you if they are going to lose your custom anyway.

So if she went into the red by a few pounds, put £100 or so in and then let her talk about the charges. If your successfull, wait until the charges have been applied (and refunded) before taking the money back out.

Why? It does not automatically follow that a person who went into the red by a few pounds should, for that reason, decide to close their account.

The charges are due to be debited on that date. You should already have been advised of what they should be. Pay in enough money to repay the overdraft and cover the charges. But remember that if the account is currently overdrawn there may be more charges for the interest currently being incurred due on the 2nd of the following month as well.
