my son has been home for the christmas beak.
He is a Uni does not receive a student loan.
My wife and I pay course fees, his rent through the uni and give him a living allowance during term time.
It was our hope to help complete his degree course debt free in 18 months time.
due to some unforseen circumstances he is unable to complete the course this year and will not be returning until September 2007 at a different UNI.
My question is will my wife and I still have to pay via direct debit until may 2007 for the rent and course fees.
Thanks

I very much doubt it, so long as your son has not attended any of the lectures in his second semester. That is the case at my uni, anyway. Though I know that some universities do ask you to pay for the entire year... I suggest that you contact the finance department at his uni and see what system they have in place.0

My daughter withdrew in November I just got 75% of the fees back, the % goes down significantly in December and I think the rent may be a different story fortunately my DD was commuting from home. Get your son to call the finance office on Monday to find out where you stand.0

You may be liable for the rent, as per the terms on the tenancy agreement...April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200

Last year I left uni in November (2005). I then had to get a doctor's note and write to the uni accommodation people to cancel my tenancy. Without the doctor's note I would have had to pay the full year. Best thing is to contact the uni and explain the circumstances. Also when I had to do this my academic advisor was a lot more helpful than the accomm/finance office people so maybe your son should try that type of person first? I returned to the same uni this September (and told them that was my plan at the time of withdrawing), I don't know if that was a factor in how my situ was dealt with by them.0

You're usually liable to pay the rent unless you find someone to fill his room - which might be difficult - fees however you will get back.0

If it is a halls room the student accomodation office will try to fill the room but you will have to pay rent on it til they do. Since we've gone past the Christmas break already that probably means you'll be paying up til Easter. Contact the accomodation office about it.
As others have said you should get a rebate on fees for the remaining semesters. How much that is will depend on how the particular uni structures their terms or semesters. As others have said this will be dealt with by the finance office. It may be that you need to contact them directly rather than via your son since it is your direct debit and not his.0
