Well I've found them! Except they're not all in the usual place, and won't load up when I click on the desktop icons.. I can't get it to go online either, or recognise the hard drive so that I can save my stuff!!

    Any ideas??

Im not a techie myself but in the meantime could you save it on to a disc or a memory stick.

Hopefully someone will be along soon to help more.

Thanks, It won't recognise the external hard drive but I will try a memory stick when I find it. It is just so frustrating!!

Worst case, from a Windows PC download this http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/ then create a bootable USB stick with something Ubuntu on it.
Boot your netbook from USB and it will load Ubuntu/whatever distro you chose. You should be able to read the files from the netbooks hard drive and copy them to the external.
That wont fix the issue with the netbook but will save your files.
    One last thing...
    Backup! ;)

When you first switch on the netbook, keep hitting 'Del' on the keyboard and it should take you into the BIOS where you can set the boot options.
If 'del' doesn't work it may be another key like F2, it often tells you on the POST screen at startup, it'll say something like 'Press Del to enter Setup'.
