Nitty gritty comb question please

hi there,
i did post this on the pets forum but didn't got any answers really.

I was wondering if anyone had used the nitty gritty comb on their pets for fleas and if it worked. My dog has got the again

Obviously i won't be using the same one for my DS but don't want to fork out another 12 quid if it doesn't work.

So has anyone used it and was it any good?:o

I'm not sure about pets but you can get them on prescription for your child and try it for free!
Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.
  • ooh thanks i didn't know that, I've already forked out for one, couldn't believe how much they are!

Using a Nitty Gritty comb on a dog might cause more problems than it solves.

Even using it conjuction with conditioner, my daughter used to squeal and squirm constantly during every comb through. How would your dog cope?

Also, how would you section the dog's coat to ensure a clean sweep of his 'little friends'?

If the spot on monthly flea treatment for the vet isn't working (and sometimes it doesnt' work on mine) they do a frontline spray which is horrendously expensive, comes in a huge spray with enough to treat every dog in Battersea, and stings your hands as you rub it in their tummy. However, it works a treat.

When my cat has fleas I use a fine tooth comb like this

It seems to catch them really well (I have a tub of hot soapy water to hand to swish the comb in to kill the fleas!). I use Frontline as well but it doesn't seem to be as effective anymore so she still gets them.

  • The spacing of the teeth on a flea comb and on a conventional nit comb are much the same, so I would expect the nitty gritty comb to work just as well for fleas, providing of course it is done thoroughly and regularly. :)
  • My sister uses the nitty gritty comb on her cat with one bowl of boiling water, one of cold so the comb doesn't burn, and kitchen towel to wipe hair etc off, and it works fine on the cat.

I imagine it would be ok.

My only thought is the ends of the comb can scratch and a dog may not sit still enough for you to avoid accidentally hurting it.

I don't see a problem with using the same comb tbh - you can thoroughly wash and sterilise/boil it afterwards...

Frontline stopped working for us too so I'm using BM Double Action spot on- it's over- the- counter but has the same active ingredient as one of the prescription- only treatment. I figure if we use that for 6-8 months the Frontline might start working again! The BM works on the larvae too.

The nitty gritty would help in that you'll be controlling numbers but I don't think it would be much better than a normal flea comb- nits stick to the hairs, remember, fleas run around

I would just get a different flea product, Frontline stopped working on our dog too so he is now on tablets from the vets which are working so far :)
