Please can I ask folk on here not to follow the methods shown tonight on The One Show - they are potentially dangerous for humans and dogs. These programmes are highly edited and little regard shown for the dogs behaviour after it has been treated like this.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

I caught a few minutes where he was apparently teaching the dog not to guard its food by putting his foot in the way and having the dog repeatedly sinking its teeth into his shoe
I did think that if you tried a similar technique with mutt you'd have your foot bitten off. And possibly your leg as well. Asking for trouble IMHO.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Just watched it - I'm appalled!! Just looks likes he (the "trainer") is having a full on fight with the poor dog! No praise or anything positive at all.

I started another thread on this subject before seeing this one.
The young "Trainer" is awful please dont use these methods. I cant think what theBBC are thinking off putting someoone like that on tv. What are his qualifications? what experience has he got?
That dog was showing classic signs of stress ie avoiding eye contact, lip smacking, panting etc etc.
Yes it had problems but that persons method are asking for trouble. To show a child how to take food away from a food aggressive dog is just asking for trouble.0 -
Surely it would be easier to teach a child not to go near the dog's food? Mine is fine with his bowl of food but oh boy, touch his bone when he's chewing on it and you might want to think about counting your fingers :P (note- he's never bitten me when I've done this!)
Our greatest weakness lies in giving up; always try just one more time0 -
I've always trained mine from young pups to give up any food, bones, etc etc whenever I try to take it. It works so long as you start from a young age, and they quickly understand that they will get rewarded as soon as they 'leave it'.
Have to say that the demonstration from that idiot on TV made me cringe. I wonder if he'd do the same with a large Shepherd or Rottie???!! He's obviously trying to be the British Cesar Milan and failing dismally!0 -
The frustrating thing is, the food one is so simple to solve - just teach the dog that human hands come to give not take - maybe using a long handled spoon to start with, just put half the dogs ration in the bowl, then add a little bit when the dog has nearly finished and keep repeating. Try not to make eye contact just 'share the moment'. Hand feeding can help too, if the dog isn't too 'snatchy'Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

Can I urge anyone who saw the show and was as appauled as I am to complain to the BBc about this person. We really dont need A "expert" like him putting dog training back years.
It seem alot of people are unhappy about this from looking on the one shows facebook page.0 -
