Red Hair Dye Advice. Please!!

Hiya! About 2 months ago, I started dying my hair bright red! I absolutely LOVE it, but what Im not loving so much is the upkeep! Now, I understand that red fades quicker than other colours, but I didnt think Id be re doing it about once every three weeks! So, Ive got a couple of questions...

How can I make it last a bit longer? Anyone got any tips, or tricks that I could use?

And secondly, to other 'bright red hair dyers'... What brands have you found to be the best, and how long are they lasting on average?

Muchly thanks in advance!!

  • I asked a friend of mine a similar question to this recently. I haven't actually tried this because I haven't actually got around to dying my hair in ages but apparently washing your hair in cold water is supposed to keep the colour in longer.

Also apparently hair dyes with a 6 (I think) in the number (the number that says what colour it is) will supposedly fade quicker, can't confirm this though because as I said I haven't done my hair in ages.

Wash your hair in lukewarm/cold water. Hot water strips the dye from hair.

Never use Head and Shoulders/anti-dandruff shampoo because that strips the hair dye too.

Use shampoo/conditioner for coloured hair. John Frieda do a shampoo and conditioner for those with red hair called "Radiant Red". It's about £5 each but it has pigments in it which help to make/keep the hair red. It also lasts for ages and the hair is so soft afterwards (in my experience anyway :o).

I had red hair for years and following the steps above is how I minimised how much I dyed my hair/kept my hair a nice vibrant red. I only recently dyed my hair blue black as I fancied a change.

I used to use Schwarzkopf XXL Live - usually in radiant red, but sometimes real red too. The hair dye is permanent but I did love how vibrant the colour was.

  • I dyed my hair red for about 2 years. I used to leave it on for a lot longer than the box said, usually a little over an hour. Never gave me any problems! I found this helped a lot. I would also avoid washing it for the next couple of days if possible.

I used to switch between schwartzkopf and whatever was on offer. The schwartzkopf gave the best and brightest colour.

For years I had really vibrant red hair and got into the habit of only washing it once a week. This was the only way to preserve the colour. I would dampen it down every day and refresh the products but it takes a while to get used to the feeling of going from daily to weekly washing.

I have my hair dyed a very vibrant red at the moment. Normally it fades like theres no tomorrow (this is due to red dyes themselves having larger particles which aren't easily attached to hair and when they are do wash off with ease) but this current dye is fantastic.

I have a Matrix dye on, they did boost the formula somewhat as I was a colour model demo but all they did was to boost more % the developer and leave for a little bit longer, nothing more.

I use Pureology at the moment, really rate the salon brands as they last for much longer as you don't need as much each time. I have mine from way back in June. I had the Matrix people (who did my hair) talk about their new colour shampoo and conditioner lines which are the "best yet and work to keep colour for at least 48 washes!" have some to try but not tried it as yet, its a similar price to the higher priced stuff at boots (£5 or £6 a bottle), could be worth a look?
  • I have used the below... it's the only colour I found would actually take on my hair and it did it well! Same fading problem though :(

Also seems to be available less widely over the last couple of months, but have managed to pick some up at Superdrug and Savers (and maybe Wilkos)
