Avoiding A4e "Getting and finding a job" module

  • I think most adults know where to look for a job, how to fill in an application form properly and what to do and say at an interview. O.k there may be some people who have difficulty with this but they are in the minority. Or maybe Im wrong o thats why people are unemployed they dont know what to do to look for work! Obviously 2.5 million people are thick and stupid.

Given the number of people who visit this Board to ask questions about completing application forms and preparing for interviews, I don't think your first sentence is necessarily true.

Not knowing everything about finding jobs doesn't mean someone is "thick and stupid". Not accepting there could be a different way of doing something may mean that.
  • In my opinion and its that mine alone, people are generally not unemployed because their job search techniques are inadequate.Or because of "multiple barriers", its pure and simple there are not enough jobs to meet demand.

In my opinion (and I doubt very much it's mine alone), quite a proportion of people are unemployed because they have absolutely no idea how to conduct themselves or dress for interviews. They don't research the position or appear remotely enthusiastic about the job. I have interviewed several times for a position in my team and was frankly shocked at how some people arrived for their interview. I expected a few, but over two-thirds of the applicants really needn't have bothered getting out of bed (they looked like they literally just had). I've had people turn up in jeans, leggings, chewing gum and grunting one-word answers at my questions.

Whether this applies to the OP or not, there are definitely some people who would benefit from lessons in job searching and interviews. And there ARE jobs, there's just a lot more competition for them at the moment so applicants have to rise above their competitors and be outstanding!

They don't. Succeeding at interview, in particular, is a game and if you want to win the game you need to know the rules. It's not a question of being thick or stupid. Going on a 'how to get a job' course (private consultant, not a4e) was one of the best investments of 2 days of my time that I ever made. Between walking into the room and siting down on a chair, many candidates have lost the job already. And that's before anyone has said anything. 2.5 million unemployed is even more reason, not less, to go on this type of course. Naturally, if there are X number of candidates more than there are jobs then X number of people will be unemployed so whether the taxpayer should be funding these courses is another question. But from the individual's perspective I would suggest doing it and learning from it what you can.

The problem is people think they know and don't take advice. You should see some CV's and applications that are handed in to employers.

I think you do get things out of courses like these, i kinda liken it to a first time offender going into prison for shoplifting and coming out out able to hot wire a car.
