you could also make a few bob by hiring it out when you arent using it - the park allowed us to do that and many owners did. It paid the site fees for them. I couldnt bear to do that - silly really, but it felt like my home and I didnt want strangers in it! friends of ours used to let theirs be hired in July and I used our caravan most then! after all - it was for holidays we used it most!

if it's just the few months without a buffer you're worried about, take out a credit card so you have something to fall back on should , god forbid, anything dreadful happened that meant you needed to borrow a few thousand quid quickly.

Because in all eventuality nothing will happen, BUT it never hurts to have a back-up plan. An interest free credit card would get you out of the poop AND not cost anything in interest, by which time you'd have the money to pay for whatever emergency it was in the first place.

Personally I would say go for it. The freedom, space and memories for the kids are priceless. It is not going to financially cripple you, and you may never get this opportunity again.
I am desperate to get a touring caravan and site it somewhere from March to October, thankfully hubby has come round so I am saving like mad for a decent one.
WE have had holidays in Spain, Portugal, Madeira etc but the happiest memories for holidays are from when the kids were wee and it was caravan holidays we had. Now having a grandson I want to be able to give him good memories of going with Granny and Granda in the caravan - even the ones where the rain was runiing down the windows and the seagulls dancing on the roof!

Fingers crossed your offer is accepted!!!! ENJOY, enjoy, enjoy!

  • Hi

Had to post on this one.. My dad bought one last year... he too was worried about the costs but he like yourself had no mortgage payments and decided to go for it. My half brother is only 5 and so him, his wife and his son go off every friday after school and return on sunday.. they also just spent lots of the summer there and say that when they are there they tend to do cheaper things... walks on the beach.. nature trails.. swimming ..instead of eating out, cinema trips and shopping like they do here. Also we have had some brilliant times there with them and some great memories. I think sometimes its easy to go the other way on MSE. If you are in a good finiancial situation then I think its ok to live and enjoy life without worrying constantly after all we could sit here all day and think of the what ifs but in reality there are plenty of people that have there boilers go or are made redundant and they have rent to pay and debt. Even in that situation people get through the hard times.

I think your in a very good situation, one I would love to be in and i think you should go with what your heart tells you and like you said if it gets very expensive or its not for you, its a lesson learnt and you can recoup some of the money by selling your van

Well we've done it! Had an offer accepted, and will be doing all the financials and contracts this week. I feel great now we have made the decision, all the worries seem to have melted away, and been replaced by excitement!

Despite my mistaken misgivings (because I didn't read the OP properly :o) congratulations :T.
I hope you have as much fun in your second home as we all did in my mum's caravan. We had so many good times, so many laughs, so many unusual dinners :D. We still talk about 'Do you remember when ......'
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
