I have just received my bill from Eon for the past quarter and it is saying that I have used £305 of electric using 1883kwh:eek:. My usual amount is around £165 using 818 kwh per quarter. This seems wrong to me as I am really careful making sure that all appliances etc are switched off when not in use. My energy tracker says I have been using 32kwh per day. When I rang them the person on the phone said that the readings were right ...although he did thing that the usage was high. My monthly payments are rising from £63 to £125..I just dont have this extra money to spare...Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

  • Hi BREX

Following on from what harrowing says, was a previous bill under-estimated and this latest one is a catch up now we have an actual reading? If this is the case, it may be the electricity was used over a longer period.

If the readings are accurate and you're using more electricity than before, there may be ways of cutting back. We can help here as we've an Energy Efficiency team who specialise in helping people reduce their usage.

It might help to talk to this team. Tell them about your property and appliances; they'll be happy to help.

Ask for a copy of a booklet called '100 ways to save money by saving energy.' It's free and contains lots of good advice.

Check out our website, too; particularly the Interactive House and Energy Fit campaign. More good tips here.

Hope this is of use BREX. Give me a shout if you need any more details as will be happy to help.

    Hi Malc
The previous bill was not underestimated ...this is just the energy used in the last quarter
Like I said I am really careful with using my electric and my habits have not changed at all..as I have no extra money to pay for higher bills.
I have spoken to the Energy Efficency Scheme and they said I am doing all the things they advise...so short of not using any electric at all I just dont understand how it can jump up by1000kwh in a quarter.

  • If this really is genuine usage rather than issues with estimated bills then for your usage to more than double really does sound odd. You'd need to have bought some pretty power hungry appliances to manage that, or to dramatically change the way you use the ones you already have. 1000kWh per quarter (~11 kWh per day) is a lot of energy to account for. (I use < 4 kWh per day total, although I do live on my own and have gas heating and hot water.) Are there any new purchases or changes you've made that you can think of?

If not, I guess it might be worth switching absolutely everything off and checking that your meter stops counting up, to check for a major fault there?
  • What was the meter reading on your last 'normal' bill

What is the stated meter reading on this 'unusally high' bill?

What number is the actual meter reading at this very moment?

If the meter reading currently is similar to the one on your latest 'high' bill then you either must have used the amount of Electricity it indicates (at some time) or the meter is faulty.

You dont have an immersion heater on all time do you? This heats your hot water up when I believe when it reaches temperature it tops it up. Haven't had one of them in donkeys years as I use combi boiler (gas)

That's a good idea of something to check.

(I think that an immersion heater left on permanently would act like room heating, switching on when the water temperature drops below a set level, and then off again once heated up to a second higher set temperature. An immersion heater left on continuously like this certainly would waste a lot of energy!)

OP, your figures don't make sense. 1,883kWh on standard rate will cost around £190, not £305.
And 1,883kWh in a 3 month summer period is not 'careful use', it's incredibly high. That would give an annual figure of 7,500kWh even without allowing for increased winter usage. That's about twice the average for a 3 b/r house with gas CH and DHW.
Please confirm the number of days in the billing period, and the opening and closing meter readings.
I suspect that at least £100 of your bill is a catch-up from previous estimated billing-so your DD is rising sharply to pay off that debt and cover future higher usage.

What is that? Something printed on the bill or a monitor gadget?

Anyway as well as the recent posts suggesting you compare bill and current meter reading should should get a handle on your consumption by taking daily readings for a week and then weekly readings for a month.

Find out how your daily readings compare with "32".

BTW its not helpful (to getting help) that you don't mention how your home is heated. 32kWhrs/day (in summer) is excessive, but 32kWhrs/day, averaged over a year in an electrically heated house would not be "excessive".

But 1,883kWh over a summer quarter, with or without electric heating, would be.
