Options
Please I would some advice how to transfer some selected programmes and data to a new computer e.g my antivirus software as it was a download I bought, microsoft office 2000 as I do not the CD, my internet connection as I use Btyahoo 24/7,also I use floppy for my data. I understand new computers do not have a floppy drive. Presently I am using windows 98. Any help please, but something very simple as I do not understand computer. I have also see that they charge to install the computer. I am wondering whether it will be better to pay for this service and it would help if they can transfer the data I want to the new computer. Thinking of buying an XP, dell probably. Thanks

I have just bought a new computer from pc world and it was really easy to set up nothing to technicall and mine did have a floppy drive, but you can get a usb pen drive which we got 512 mb for £30 ish which does the same as a floppy does and holds far more.

I have just built one ...

Take out the old hard drive and slot it into your new machine and then either leave it there or copy what you want over.

I can do this but am probably not the best to ask the tecky bits...i have a bit of a bish bash bosh approach which is not reccommended.

If you buy a Dell PC, and are not sure of the install process and transferring of data, they will (For a fee) do all that for you. However, they will only transfer DATA, not PROGRAMS. If you currently use a floppy to move data about and wish to continue to do so, then specify that you want one in your new PC.

Since your new PC will more than likely have Windows XP on it, you can use the 'Files and Settings Transfer Wizard' that comes with the PC. There are plenty of guides on how to use the FSTW on the web. Google will provide you with plenty of links.

However, you cannot transfer PROGRAMS (such as MS Office, Anti-Virus Software, etc) from PC to PC. They require to be installed on each PCas they make changes to the Windows Registry and other PC settings on installation. Just copying the program files across will not work.

if you already have a Bt Yahoo account you have a thing called "Briefcase" where you can store data, just upload what you need (as the other post said you cannot do this with Microsoft office) and then download them to your new Pc

Does not Norton Ghost allow you to clone a drive. Thus not having to re-install everything.

That is what they would use to copy the details over in a shop as far as I am aware.

But personally I would just move the hard drive over to the new machine and then you would have two drives.

I would never allow a hard drive to leave me. Just for security reasons. best way to destroy a hard drive is with hammer and extreme prejudice.

    But then I am paranoid.

We had a visitor who had a usb pen and I saw how easy it was to transfer things from laptop to PC so I bought one but it doesn't work for me. I am so untechnical!

    Margaret,

Not sure how it can't work. As it is usb device and should be automatically detected by the machine and windows.

What version of windows are you running.

I assume the usb port you are plugging it in to works. Try another usb device. e.g mouse etc.

Not sure what else to suggest.

What happens when you plug it in does it give you the technicall;) bing bong? does it show up in my computer? is there maybe a lock facility on it which has been activated? Ours has a lock but we havent used it. Do these work on usb 1 im not sure as last 2 pcs have been usb2 and to be honest failing all that there is a slim chance its a faulty one.
