Background:
We bought a sofa in 2008 with warranty from home serve. New dog has chewed a scatter cushion which forms the back foe the sofa. Informed them, and they sent someone out to have a look, advised it would be replaced.
Had a phone call today from them advising unable to get a replacement, but they will give me up to £75 to find a replacement.
Tbh the last thing I want to do is trail around shops trying t find an exact match in colour and size, chewed cusion is exact shade of of a, of which I have two, so really need an exact match.
I asked what would happen if. Did not want this/ couldn't fin one andvthey said it would be referred back to their solution team....
Wwyd?

use the 75 to pay a vet to have your dog put down. now with the budgeted mony saved in dog litter/ vets fees/ dogfood etc pay a taxidermist to stuff him with cushion foam. problem solved.0

Vey helpful.
Maybe I could use the money to help rid the world of those people who try so hard to be funny but only fail so badly0 -
And dog litter? Seem to have saved some money there already as never heard of a litter tray trained dog...0

Gosh - I think this is a brilliant advert for both the insurance and the sofa companies -they seem to have been doing everything to help. If my dog had chewed the sofa I wouldn't dream of claiming. It's my dog and my fault - I wouldn't expect anyone else to pay.
If the company are unable to find another cushion of the same colour, it might be worth taking all the cushions along to an upholsterers and have them recovered together. Much easier than the hassle of chasing sofa companies and insurance companies whose fault none of this is.
Well that's what I'd do anyway.0 -
I think you are a victim of the warranty con that so many members of the british public fall victim to.
These companies are happy to take your money but in reality can never deliver the service promised, or more importantly don't want to as it is either too costly or too much money.
You will probaly find in the small print that they are withiun their rights to do what they are doing.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Why wouldn't I claim when in the policy it's says I'm covered for pet damage? Why would I pay £250 for a policy I wouldn't use cause it was my fault?
It's covered for drink spillage to, should I not claim if I accidentally spill something? Why would I have it if I'm nt going to claim if needs be?0 -

And tbh, any insurance claim ever made is not the fault of there's. If someone crashes their car is that the insurance companies fault? No, but they still pay out cause that iswhat they are there for.0 -

Ah well this is why I don't have contents insurance then - I'm just thinking of trivial things. If I spill coffee on my carpet then that's my fault and I clean it, I don't expect my fellow insurees to pay for it - unless they spilt it that is. Someone I know spilt coffee in this way and because the house was open plan ended up claiming for the whole ground floor to be carpeted - that's awful! Claiming for something like this just puts everyone's premiums up. The original poster has already had 3 year's good use from the sofa. From the money spent on premiums it's often far cheaper to just pay for a repair/replacement by a local craftsperson. £250 would easily pay for that - and more!
Sorry I don't have a logical answer, just a gut feeling! And the OP did ask what we would do. I've never had contents insurance and never once regretted it.0 -

Let's hope your not burgled then, or pretty sure you will regret it0 -

Unlikely, I don't own anything that's of any great value and have never been burgled in 60 years, so all those premiums I've saved! And if it's anything like your experience, the insurers wouldn't help anyway so what's the point?
Insurance companies, along of course with advertisers and the other usual suspects, are the worst parasites, preying on peoples fears and encouraging expensive unnecessary consumerism.
Anyway, this isn't about me, hope the sofa can be recovered by a helpful local upholsterer. Or for 250, go and get another one. Lots on ebay/freecycle etc. too.
Hope your dog is ok after the experience.0
