You keep picking that spike. It's worth noting you keep picking the absolute top of the spike. A spike which lasted not very long at all and came flying back down again over a couple of years.
House prices have been higher than the spike you keep pointing out for 8 years now.
1973 isn't that great a comparison to say people were worse off, if you look at it that way.
I've admitted many times that I think house prices are high and they are above long term average but most bears on here seem to think that its only now that house prices have been this high. If you look at that graph you will see that there have been times in the past when house prices have been high not as high as the last boom admittedly. If you look at the graphs based solely on price to earning ratio the best time to buy was mid 90s not 60s or 70s.0 -

What I can say is that within BT the highest level of technician earns over £30k and the highest level technician in the early 70s earnt about £1.5k.0 -

Digital exchanges were introduced in the early 80s the same exchanges are in use now.0 -

None have been as high for this extended period of time though. Wages increase and house prices increase further.
That's the issue.
There are a few spikes on the graph, and you keep pointing 1973 out in many many threads. But that's all it was, an abnormality and a huge spike, mainly caused by inflation before wages caught up, hence house price to salary falls so quickly.
It's nothing like the period we've been through over the last decade.0 -

I believe you are talking about 1973. Not the early 80's?
Still, even the 80's are massively different to today. Are you serious stating you can compare a telecoms engineer role in the 80's to one today?
I don't really want to get into a debate about roles of engineers, just wish the insistance to try and make out 1973 was just as bad, and really loosly, and lazily comparing jobs which can't be compared to make the point, would tail off.0 -

Didn’t I just say that but we are pass that are prices are falling in real terms.0 -

You said 30 years not me the first electronic exchanges were introduced in the 70s.0 -

So you are saying the roles of a telecom engineer were the same in the 1970's as they are now.
Right, ok.
Just like IT programmers earn just as much today as they did 10 years ago. :wall:
Not much left to say, I can't really argue any further.0 -

I have a sneaking suspicion that ukcarper knows what he's talking about!0 -
Is a telecom engineer someone who installs phone systems? If so my brother is one of those and earns upwards of 70k.
Same as this I guess http://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/jobs/uk/telecoms%20engineer.do
