Rent Benfit After sale - Help Anyone?

I lifed with an elderly relative who had a mortgage on their own home. When they passed away the house was left to me in their will, unfortunatley I had just been made redundant before the passing and was not able to afford a mortgage in my own name to keep the house. As such I was forced to sell the property. I sold it to a landlord/Property developer who lket me rent it back. I used most of the money from the sale of the house to pay my rent for over a year in advance. Now I have sub, itted a claim to the council for rent benefit and have been told no as I got proceeds from the sale of the house? Is this correct or is there anything I can do? I should mention I live in Scotland if this makes any difference?
Thanks

Depends on how much you got from the sale. Housing benefit is generally not paid to those with a certain amount in savings. I think it's about £6k. There must have been a minimum of equity in the property if all it gave you was a year's worth of rent in advance.0
