Renewing my Car Insurance

Quick fire questions:
(I've had a quick look around, but couldn't get any definitive answers)

- What is the significance of whether I drive other cars? Will selecting Yes, or No lower my quote/premium?

- No. of cars in my household. Why do they need to know this? Will selecting 1 or 2 lower my quote/premium?

- Is 1 "speeding" ticket a motoring offence? Is a speeding ticket something I have to declare? This was in a vehicle other then my own.

I think that answering the questions honestly is best & the speeding offence is a motoring offence & should be disclosed.

    Quite right Labman.

For what its worth, if you drive other vehicles as well and have no claims to declare then it indicates that you are a lower risk and helps to keep your premium lower.

It makes no difference what car you were driving when you got the speeding ticket. You committed the offence, not the car.

If you tell any lies (and missing out information you have been asked to declare is lying by omission) and you get caught out, you could find yourself with voided insurance and refusal to pay out on any claims.

The answers you give are the correct ones: anything else simply isn't worth the risk of being caught.

The first two questions probably won't make much difference to your premium unless you are a parent with a teenage child, insuring (say) a Saxo when you already have (say) a BMW in your own name. So if you present with a profile that you, a 45-year-old woman, owning and driving another car, with you and your 18-year-old son as named drivers (and yourself as main driver) you will get hammered on the premium because it's a huge red flag for fronting.

Otherwise there is a slight possiblity of a few quid if you drive/have access to more cars but probably no gain whatsoever in changing your answer (admittedly very little risk of getting caught, but the risk is still greater than the possible reward).

The third question about speeding: yes, it's a motoring offence and it very much needs to be declared if you want to have any cover at all if and when you make a claim. At the very least, you can expect to be hit with the difference between the premium you are charged and that which you should have been charged (which could mean that the insurer you end up with would be more expensive than being with the right insurer for your true circumstances) and quite possibly, the insurer could refuse to pay out altogether.

Life tends to be simpler, and cheaper, if you're honest.

  • The speeding ticket is against your licence regardless of who's car you were driving so if you lie or not disclose this at renewal you will be paying your premium for nothing, because they will check the database before paying out any claim, and well the rest I'm sure you know.

I sold car insurance for a few years and here is my understanding of this-

1, Some insurer will give you a disocunt on your insurance if you have access to another car and you have zero NCD - It may lower ur policy if you have zero NCD

2, I would always select nil as it can have a loading on your policy, and you might find that the company may not offer DOC extension on your policy.

3, Speeding tickect whether its a Sp30, Sp40, SP50, or matter of fact any SP is a traffic offence which in turn is a motoring offence. You must declare it if asked to go back that far. Even when the point are off your licence and are within 3/5yrs you will find you need to declare them. Even if the points where given to you on another car, its not the car that has the conviction its you.

    Hope that helps
