Money from bank after a death

Options
Anyone know how quickly Northern Rock release the funds after a bank account has been closed following a death? A couple of other High Street banks have paid out within a week of closure but I've been waiting a bit longer with NR. The amounts are all under probate limits.

    A bit harsh.

We don't know how long ago the account holder died. Is there a rule that says you have to leave funds untouched forever and a day?

I'd suggest getting the money out as soon as legally possible if it's in a low paying account so that you can distribute it efficiently in accordance with the deceased's wishes.

Ringing NR is the best way to get an answer though.

how does it sicken you, the poor OP is probably trying to sort out some ones close to thems affairs, without it they cannot get closure.

If you have ever dealt with an estate you would know how much extra stress this process adds at a difficult time. They could even need it for paying funeral expenses.

What do you want them to do leave the money in the bank account forever.

OP it depends everyone has their own timings best to call them.
  • Thank you for the supportive replies.
For what it's worth I will explain I am not a beneficiary I am just adminstering the account, one of the beneficiaries is in dire financial circumstances and I'm trying to help them out. The person who has died would be extremely pleased I am fullfilling the role I was given to the best of my abilities.
There is usually someone on this forum who has had a similar experience so I thought I'd give it a shot, I am actually going into the bank next week anyway.

  • Took about two weeks when my Mum died, once they'd accepted there was no need for probate (which, in itself, took a couple of phone calls). Seems to be very dependent on the bank/financial institution though.

    HTH.
