MS Word Help

I’m using MS Word, but when I open it, its bring up the page (which is usually blank) with wording that I typed previously on it and every time I open a new blank document the wording is appearing.

Does anyone know how to re-set the ‘new blank document’ page with no typing coming up?

I don’t want to have to uninstall word and re-install it as I’ve got lots of files with documents in that I need to keep.

Your help would me much appreciated as Its so annoying.

  • You've probably saved the blank document template with that text. Open a blank document, delete all text and then save as a template (it's in the list of file type options) replacing normal.dot.

Reinstalling shouldn't effect your existing documents.

Never seen this happen before but try selecting all of the text (Ctrl a) and delete it. Then File, Save as but in the Save as Type dropdown box, select Document Template (*.dot)

Agree with grahawk. You have saved a document as your normal.dot template. Follow his instructions and you should be okay.
  • Better still, before saving to normal.dot, set the font, margins etc., to your preferred settings. This will mean that every time you open a new document, it will have these settings.

You can create other templates for letterheads etc.

    Agreed.

If you remove and reinstall Word, all you are changing is the Word Software. All the documents that you created with Word will still be where you put them.

As always, make sure you have back up copies of these on an external drive, CD or DVD etc.

However there is probably no reason to re install Word. The advice above about the normal.dot template is sound.

    just delete normal.dot
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • I've tried doing what grahawk suggested but still can't get it to save as blank page. When I open a new page the wording I've typed is still there. Is there anything else you can suggest.

Can you give a breakdown of how and what I'm to do as I think I'm still doing something wrong.

    Many thanks
  • Press Ctrl+ F to open the Find dialogue box. Select the C Drive and search for "normal.do" without the quotation marks. Delete any normal.dot files that you find and MS Word should create a new normal.dot

    Should work.

Open Word. Tools, Options, File Locations to see the path where your Templates are stored on your system. Navigate to this directory using Explore and delete Normal.dot
