Free fat trap from Anglia water.

"Every year householders pour thousands of litres of waste fat, grease and cooking oil down their sinks, unaware of the problems it may cause.
The hot liquid cools quickly to form a solid mass and can, over time, build up in pipes and sewers and result in a blockage. In extreme situations, drains and sewers become blocked leading to the flooding of gardens and properties.
Hence the creation of a new product 'Fat Trap', a sealable tub that encourages customers to collect the fat and oils into it before disposal into a bin. Anglian Water has teamed up with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the manufacturer Less Mess Ltd to not only encourage people to avoid putting greasy deposits down their plugholes but also to recycle it for the benefit of garden birds.
However, if you live outside of our region, for a small fee of around £1.00, you too can purchase a Fat Trap directly from the manufacturer, Less Mess Ltd at https://www.lessmess.co.uk or by calling 01271 817 977."

  • Great idea! I currently buy fat balls nuts n seed to put out for the birds. They seem particularly fond of the fat balls. Now I can make my own, recyle more stuff and protect the plumbing. Puffs out chest and dons Superhero costume
What I don't get though is how does this differ from putting the fat into any old (hence recycling bum bum) tub with a lid eg old coleslaw, cottage cheese etc tub?
  • I was wondering that as well!
  • Here is a description of it from the website: The Fat Trap holds 500ml, will sit neatly on the work top beside the cooker and will take the waste fat, oil and grease and gravy etc from every day frying, roasting and cooking.
The Fat Trap has a ¾ screw cap for easy opening and sealing and the internal funnel will encourage slow pouring for less spillage and funnily enough Less Mess!

went to page and entered details but got no information but heres hoping :p
i love to feed the birds here with fat blocks while throwing away fat from cooking (not much, were low fat  ). sunflower seeds and peanuts go down well here also :T
  • I got one of these from Anglian Water. It took ages to arrive. Its just a plastic tub like you get Swarfega hand cleaner or car grease in with a screw on lid and inside is like a small removable funnel thing so any liquid fat you pour in will drain down the middle and then solidify in the bottom. A coleslaw pot or anything similar will do the same job.

...sometimes though, if you put hot fat into coleslaw tubs or similar, it distrorts or even melts the tub ...

I think this is a great idea, thanks OP

I have an old mug I keep in the fridge and always pour any waste fat into it , when its full I usually scrap it into and empty milk container and throw out or If I am feeling energetic make fat balls for the birds.. I would never put fat down the sink...I did hear that in restaurants they even pour fat waste down the loo  Why would you want to risk blocking your drain and then have to pay someone £'s to come and unblock it:rotfl:

  • Recipe for bird cake
Mix seeds, nuts, oatmeal and dried fruit into the warm fat held in your 'fat trap'
Insert a piece of string into the pot and allow the fat to cool / solidify.
Turn out the contents of the fat trap and either hang up or place onto a bird table when solid.
You can then wipe out the Fat Trap and either re - use or recycle.
  • I use an old glass jar and put the screw lid back on - it avoids the smell! When I'm feeling energetic I remelt it an mix it with wild bird food and put it on the bird bath platform. We used to get the main drains blocked a lot (shared by four houses) until we convinced everyone to do this.
