Bamboozled by security!!!

Options
I KNOW this is covered in (probably lots of) other areas in this forum but I have been reading over the last couple of nights and I am completely lost.

I am completely confused as to whether I have adequate security (I realise nothing is 100%).

Basically, I have a new laptop, connected via Virgin wireless router and I use it for word processing, some spreadsheets and photos/music, along with shopping, email etc on tinternet.

I run Windows 7, and for security I have Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Firewall ON and UAC ON.

Is this sufficient for my purposes?

(On my PC I have Avast, Spybot and Malwarebytes (all free) and that got a virus/rootkit on it that I can't get rid of but which doesn't affect performance).

Ta.

You could add malwarebytes if it does not cause a problem with anything else

If you have HJT you could post the log

Also, post the name of the rootkit if you have that

    Probably best to get 2.04

  • How would I know if Malwarebytes causes a problem with anything else?:o

If you are lucky, anything already installed will say it does not run with malwarebytes when you run the malwarebytes installer

Otherwise, see if MSE reacts any differently, it shouldn't but I have never used it, then check the other security software

I would get the rootkit off though, if at all possible

The rootkit is on my other computer (a desktop with Avast etc). So far noprobs on laptop and want to keep it that way.

getting Microsoft Security essentials seemed too simple. Why do people pay for loads of other stuff if it is sufficient?

I meant to get the rootkit off the desktop if you can

Having to purchase programmes is a rare event now with the number of free ones around
  • I have MSE and Malwarebytes on my Windows 7 laptop and have found no clashes.

gotta be honest, MSE has slipped in the more recent tests and it wasn't as good as avast or avira anyway, and it's a bit of a resource-hog. You'd be better with avast or avira for anti-virus.

    What found the rootkit.

All AV's let some through, if you are lucky you won't come across them. Avast is better than mse imo, with free version of malwarebytes for backup
