I agree via Leeds is going to be cheapest.

You are far to early to get the cheapest tickets.
They are only release twelve weeks or less before travel.

But looking at what can be achieved w/e 18/21 Nov...

Stevenage to Leeds and back can be done for £26.40 per person using Advance Singles.
Book via East Coast trains website to get those prices which include their 10% web discount.
An Anytime Return from Leeds to Carlisle via Settle costs £39.90 per person.

So that trip might be possible for £132-ish for two people.

If you are eligble for railcards, knock a third off that.
You will not cover the cost of the railcards on this one trip, unless you use Tesco Clubcard deals, but the cards are valid for a full year.

And further to my earlier post...

Do not forget that there is going to be a 'substantial' fare increase in January.
  • defenitly split your ticket. we had to go from aberdeen to preston and back. the first trip cost £180 it was an urgent visit so just grabbed the first ticket. with splitting the ticket i can get back for 40 odd quid each.
