Speeding - Camera flashed.

Hi - I got flashed by a camera this afternoon. It was a Gatso camera on the opposite pavement. It flashed twice as I was going towards it. I believe there were white lines on both carriage ways.

I thought Gatso could not "get you" when you were heading towards them? Any help would be appreciated.

Generally, true Gatso cameras are not approved to "capture" vehicles travelling towards them (head-on). That is assuming that the camera concerned was actually a Gatso as opposed to a Truvelo which is somewhat similar and is approved for head-on "capture", so to speak.

If the camera involved was actually a Gatso then the fact that it flashed at a vehicle approaching it suggests that it was either triggered by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction to the OP or that it may have been fitted with a radar-only dummy unit.

More info required for a definitive answer.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

I have been camera-flashed when on the wrong side of the road as well. Nothing happened, but if there were white lines on both carriageways I wonder if yours could be approved to cover both sides. But I don't see how that could work if the road was busy!

    Wait and see!

    Hi

Looking at the pictures, its was definitely a true Gatso. I don't recall any traffic going in the opposite direction so could it had been triggered by reflections etc

If it is a Gatso then that's possible though unlikely. It is more likely that the housing contains just a radar unit (and no camera) this continues to trigger the flash unit - as a deterrent - but nothing less. When in this mode it is also known to react to traffic travelling towards it.

Lines both sides of the Gatso, isn't that just for when the authorities whom operate the Gatso can turn it around to capture the other carriageway.

If that's the case, maybe it flashed because you triggered the sensor in the road.

No, there isn't a sensor in the road with a GATSO, it emits a radar beam to measure the speed of vehicles approaching from the rear of it (i.e. on the same carriageway) and the two flashes capture images of the vehicle crossing the gridlines, the distance travelled between the two flashes being used for the secondary check, which must be with 10% of the radar reading.

If it flashed as the OP was approaching the lens, it won't produce a valid speeding ticket.
