I bought some Homepride tins of Pasta sauce from Home Bargains this week for 19p. She could get 5 for a £1 if there is one near her.

Also don't Asda do their own Smartprice Pasta sauce fpr about 49p? I am sure I have got that before.

Tesco Value pasta sauce is 27p - not much good though.

On the other hand, the Tesco own brand for 61p is very good and actually well worth the extra and still about half the price of Dolmio, Ragu, etc.

If you have a look at https://www.mysupermarket.co.uk you can price compare between Asda, Tescos, Sainsburys and Ocado (Waitrose).

From my recolection once you have selected your items (eg. pasta sauce) from one of those supermarkets, when you checkout it will compare with the others and highlight any savings incl. BOGOFs.

Not sure if its 100% accurate but it's quick and looks like it could help out?

I dont know if you have a lot or money or are skint but bear in mind that this might be the most nutrious meal that their likely to have so make sure their going to like the sauce. Microwavable stuff is totally disgusting and Ragu has no taste. So go for dolmio (not light) or mix and match so they have 4 of something and a couple of other ones. Loyd Grossmans ones are really good but they're quite expensive (but I'd imagine more nutrious). Dolmio and loyd grossman is likely to be 2 for £2 at the mo

Also I'd be thinking of other stuff to carry them through cartons of juice, toilet roll, multivitimins (if get that get the jellies the tablets taste minging, I had to chuck some out that I bought from lidl today as they were that bad), other stuff for them to snack on to keep them from being hungry whilst studying away (well some students study a lot)
Money, Money, Money ..... Banks/Casinos/Bookies give me all you money its a poor mans world....

Not strictly a pasta sauce i know, but we have used Chicken tonight sauces with pasta and sainsburys currently have these at half price(58p)....spanish chicken sauce is very tasty, tomatoey and great with pasta!
  • Hello and thank you for all the replies! So many choices.

In the end I went to Somerfield because I was in town and could walk so saved going further to a big supermarket. We got 10 x 500g jars of Dolmio in different varieties as I know she like these, 2 for £2. I bought a value jar for 27p - the temptation was too great - we'll see!

ashcarrot She has a main meal at lunchtime on Sat & Sun which she says is really good so the pasta in the evening is just a snack. They cook in a group of three, one providing pasta, one the sauce and the other a yogurt or something. I think they manage quite well. Last term she only missed breakfast once and only had a take-away twice. I was impressed and pleased that she has found a group of like minded friends who seem to be having a good time but not wasting their money.

I also picked up a 40 pack of KitKat (includes 10 free) for £3.05. KitKat was her only other request so I was lucky!

    Thank you

  • Thank you shelf-life and JJJ
I've bookmarked those sites to look at later.
Reluctantly off to buy Jars of Sauce now but at least I know she will eat then and wont waste her money on too many take-aways.

    No problem! :)
