Claiming cash loss-police report requirement

I lost or had my wallet stolen (not sure exactly what happened, I think I dropped it and an opportunistic thief swooped) whilst on holiday. My travel insurance requires that the loss is reported to the police within 48 hours but I had no car and the police station was in another town some distance away I couldn't report it until 3 days later when we had a hire car.
As anyone had a similar experince of claiming in this sort of situation? Should I try to claim anyway or will this rule me out? Does this rule mean anyone in a more remote area may a swell not bother with policies covering cash?

the loss is reported to the police
I woudl be grateful if anyone could confirm whether reporting actually means going into the police station in person (can this not be done over the phone?)0 -
You'd imagine that this varies by country - I'd be surprised if every country in the world's police had the same policy.can this not be done over the phone?
At the end of the day if it is a standalone travel policy and so you have no NCD considerations or such there is an argument that there is little point not trying to put a claim in and arguing it as you have nothing to lose.
The one concern of cause is that this type of incident would potentially be covered by your home insurance's personal possessions cover and so NCDs and future declarations may come into play0
