BG to Atlantic

Options
Hello all.
Have recently changed my mother in law from BG standard dual fuel to the same on Atlantic. All has gone well and a week ago had the letter from Atlantic to take final meter reading which I did.
However , this week (1 week later) BG meter reader turned up and took another reading, this was a special reading not a scheduled one.
I am now expecting BG to issue final bills with their reading as the final one and Atlantic to start charging from the one I gave them.
Are BG correct in what they have done. What should I do to get the meter readings equalised?
PS when I changed from BG to npower a year ago BG did not turn up to read my meter.

Seems odd. If BG read your meter after your start date with Atlantic, then their reading is not valid. In this case I would phone them with your final reading and point out that they can't bill you for energy that they are no longer supplying you.

Atlantic should supply BG with the reading which they should accept unless it is wrong. It seems a little odd BG read your meter, it's not normal for them to send out a meter reader when someone changes providers.

there should only be one agreed changeover meter reading, and it's determined by a third party (called the data aggregator) based on any customer reading submitted by you to either supplier, plus any other normal routine or special readings. This agreed reading will be sent to both suppliers to use. BG may be sending a reader around to check that the final reading looks correct (eg they will check that the agreed reading is lower than their reading) because if you hadn't submitted a reading and an estimate is used that is way out, they may end up issuing you with a bill that is too high or too low.
I'd just suggest when the final bill comes in someone phones up the old supplier and asks them to confirm that's the agreed change of supplier reading (it actual comes in to the supplier on a dataflow called a d0086).
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
  • Thanks all
Annie So if this data aggregator decides, how do they get the reading, because I gave the final reading to Atlantic when they told me to ( the new supplier ) and then a week later BG took their own reading.
I am not too bothered as long as the final reading from BG is the same as the initial reading on the first Atlantic bill, except that if the later BG reading is used my MiL will be paying inflated BG prices for a week longer!
  • The gaining (new) supppier obtains the final read from the customer. This is then sent to the losing (old) supplier via the data aggregator on the D86 flow. This is all done electronically with the data aggregator adding it to the readings database.

Your final read on the BG final bill should be the same as the start read with Atlantic. If not then you'll need to raise an agreed reads dispute with BG as they are the losing supplier.

When I moved, BG over-rode the supplied reading with an estimated reading that was much higher.
The new compny accepted this, despite my protestations, saying that the discrepancy was not enough for them to contest as it would cost them too much for the hassle.

As a result BG stole about £15+ worth of gas from the new supplier, I believe this is the underhand method BG uses to reduce the cost of loosing custom, good riddance.

  • Unfortunately the limits for raising an agreed reads dispute are 250 units on electricity and 50 units on gas
  • Dc Thanks for your input.I think the same is going to happen in my case, ie I have supplied the final readings to Atlantic but BG will use their readings taken a week later and Atlantic will have to accept them!

Installspark. If this does happen then it brings into question your official version of what should happen. Is BG just taking the law into their own hands and doing their own thing to keep their customers a while longer.
