iphone, dead strip?

Options
wondered if any techie folk might be able to help...I have an iphone 3G, its now out of warranty. Basically I was texting on it a few days ago and noticed the very bottom of the keyboard had stopped working (space bar etc). When I went back to the iphone apps page, the buttons on the dock wouldnt work either (phone, messages, email). So about one centimetre of the very bottom of the touch screen is just unresponsive.

I have done a reset, put it back to new phone in itunes, wont work. Took it to a guy (we dont have an apple shop here yet) who said replacing the touch screen wont work. Phoned apple that said they could repair it, but it would be about £140 which is £20 less than what I bought the phone for.

I am thinking that its probably knackard and i could just get an iphone on contract, but just wondered if there was anything else I could try at all first.

The only suggestion I could give is to replace the touchscreen but Im not confident enough to be sure, especially if someone already told you it wouldnt work (no idea why it wouldnt.

I dropped my iphone a couple of days ago which broke the glass screen but not the touch screen (luckily). That cost me £15 for the screen and kit to replace but the touch screen itself would be very expensive.

It seems it might be best if you see how much you could get for the iphone selling it for spare parts / repair and putting it towards a new phone.

PS if you do decide to get another iphone (especially the iphone 4) I would recommend waiting a month until the iphone 5 comes out as it will make the other handsets cheaper. It is estimated for sale around mid October.

You can get a new screen of ebay for about £15, the new screen contains the touch sensor as well as it is almost impossible to seperate the two as they are bonded together. Fitting the new screen is difficult. However after a few hours, and breaking my partners hairdryer from overuse (to seperate the frame from the screen you need to heat them so that the glue melts) I had a a working Iphone, plus it looked as good as new as all the little scratched from the old screen had gone.

Its worth a go, as the phone is out of warranty, however I could totally break the phone in doing so. There are loads of youtube videos to guide you in changing the screen and sensor and if I can do it, a monkey can.
