Does anyone feel like me?? Never had a routine and don't know where to start??

Started the new year of good intentions of getting myself sorted starting with the house but it still looks like the inside of a skip

To be honest I've never been very interested in housework - never had a routine of any sort - but would really like to sort myself out but I find Flylady very scary and Moggins advice is very good but I still can't motivate myself somehow. I always seem to have loads of junk that I don't want to throw away but it doesn't have a home and it seems like a huge effort to sort things out effectively and efficiently. If I'm tidying a room I have piles of stuff that belongs in other rooms so I just dump it in there cos I don't know where to put it. Then when I go into that room I seem to have to sort all the junk out before I can start actually doing any cleaning. Or I clean a room and put everything back and it doesn't look any different apart from the piles being a bit straighter and tidier.

Oh god what a boring rant...

If anyone managed to get through it any advice gratefully received MC

You could try allocating a certain room for a specific day of the week.

Nothing worse than trying to do too much at once.

Start with the smallest room......(bathroom maybe) and seeing that totally cleared will give you the incentive to move on to the next room.

That's good simple advice - but I have a huge blast every so often but then it depresses me how quickly it gets messed up again especially my 2 small hooligans (3.5yo & 2yo) !!!

Hi, I know what you mean about meaning to get sorted but then it just doesn't seem to happen, does it?

I only just finished 3 hours of going through papers on my desk and in the drawers, was coming across unopened letters from back in Jan 2005! Needless to say I think I've more than done my bit for paper recycling for at least the next 6 months.

I would say you not only need to split the sorting out into smaller chunks, but also need to actively try to not let things slide from now on. So instead of just leaving things, put each item away/file it/tidy as you use/need it. If you can stop it getting any more missy you avoid adding to what you're trying to clear and therefore just keeping on returning back to square one.
Know me for who I am, not for who I say I am.

If you have piles of stuff even after you've sorted out and tidied up it sounds like you need more storage space. Either that or you need to seriously start giving or throwing things away. The tidiest people I know have quite large houses with lots of cupboards. It's that lack of visible 'stuff' that makes places look tidy.
Also, set yourself a longer term schedule of dealing with things. Rather than clearing out one room then getting depressed about the rest, decide to tidy one room a weekend for example. Then the things that end up in another room will be dealt with eventually.
Also, get tough with yourself about the rooms that have been tidied. Ensure that they're still reasonable before you go to bed every night. And try to instill good habits in the rest of the household. So with the kids, for example, start a 'tidy up before bedtime' routine.
I personally am not a routine person at all but still manage to be reasonably tidy just by have a vision of how I'd like my house to look.

If your anything like me, then a lot of the problem is motivation! The thought of cleaning, ironing, washing or whatever else needs to be done puts me off before I'm even started! But once I get 'into it', I seem to get a satisfaction out of what I'm doing. (nothing like scrubbing the toilet is there...!)

Sounds like perhaps you need to have a big clearout & decide what you really need to keep, & as another poster said, maybe have a particular day to certain jobs. For instance every Tuesday for me I wash all the bedding..! It's just what I do now, don't even really think about it. I also hate coming down to a messy kitchen in the morning, so now I try and make sure the dishes are at least washed before I go to bed.

And I know what you mean about it getting messed up quickly with kids around, I hate it too. But as a few people have pointed out to me, it's a 'clean' mess usually, toys/games etc out.
:D I am in the future you know...
...9 hours ahead to be exact !:D
